LONDON — Eyewitnesses to the killing of a suspected bomber in London said the man looked “petrified” as he sought to escape the clutches of police.
Mark Whitby said he was sitting on the Tube at Stockwell Station (search) on Friday when the man ran in to the train car. “As he ran, he was hotly pursued by what I knew to be three plain-clothes police officers,” Whitby told BBC News 24.
"As the man got on the train I looked at his face. He looked from left to right, but he basically looked like a cornered rabbit, like a cornered fox,” Whitby said. "He looked absolutely petrified.”
"He half-tripped, was half-pushed to the floor,” Whitby said. "One of the police officers was holding a black automatic pistol in his left hand. They held it down to him and unloaded five shots into him. I saw it. He's dead, five shots, he's dead."
Teri Godly, who was also in the train car when the suspected bomber boarded, said eight or nine police officers with shotguns boarded after him and started shouting at passengers to get out.
"People started screaming and we all started running quite calmly up the stairs. There were six or seven gun shots behind us. It was very surreal. No one was pushing or shoving. We were in a state of shock,” Godly said. "It was only afterwards that I realized how lucky we had been."
Chris Wells, a 28-year-old company manager, said he was traveling on the Victoria Line (search) towards Vauxhall when he left the train at Stockwell.
He saw about 20 police officers, some of them armed, rushing into the station before a man jumped over the barriers with police giving chase.

I've heard the same thing from Army SF men in Afghanistan at the bottom of '01.
The Al Q types were not so tough when in the same room as a SF soldier and a couple Northern Alliance-types desperately yearning to skin the guy alive.
Why would they shoot the man if he was subdued? Obviously, they thought that he was wearing an explosive device, (later found that he wasn't? ) so is that why they killed him?

If he were petrified, he wouldn't be running. In fact, he would be frozen in place.
Well, since he was carrying a bomb, and running from police, and headed to a subway car with a number of innocents aboard, I have no problem with it. Nice to see they fired 5 times to make good and sure he was dead.

I think there is more to this story than is being told.
The 'assumption' that the witness wants you to make is that the man was 'unarmed' and 'scared', and that the police just held him down and killed him.
According to this statement:
"They held it down to him and unloaded five shots into him. I saw it. He's dead, five shots, he's dead."
But, later in the article, another witness states:
"There were six or seven gun shots behind us. "
So either the first witness was wrong about the number of shots, or the 'petrifed man' was shooting also.

How does someone who is "petrified" (literally turned to STONE) run away from the police?
