I'm sorry. The article doesn't make it clear; does he own the land or does he just rent it from the city?

/sarcasm

At least he isn't raising a hog or two, some chickens or goats for milking or at least the article didn't mention it. Damn city ordinances anyway.....

Considering the recent ED business, we're all just renters now.

Until you have lived next to a person who collects JUNK and trash you will not understand. We have had several people who have junked up their yards so bad in one case volunteers were allowed haul off over 9 loads of junk and accumulated trash.
Inside the house was worse, and when the leaves fall off the trees the view is worse than expected. The leaves act as a screen in summer.

The biggest problem is the owners buy this stuff hoping to use it some day. After 20 years it is time to clear it out.

At least I keep my junk hidden out behind my barn.

My husband's dad died over 12 years ago and we are still cleaning up the junk behind his barn. Not to mention the stuff IN the barn. Since I can't read the article, I will say, so far, it only mentions wood.

I don't care who you live next too. Property rights in this country as originally intended are in Fee Simple and that means the person who owns it does what they want. You don't like, move to another area. The city certainly does not have the right, constitutionally, to make someone clean up wood piles or replace their screen door because it is ripped.

Legally they can do it because laws have been passed in most towns and cities that override a persons property rights. They are unconstitutional and should be ruled such but they never will be. Too many people in this country think property values overrule property rights!

Rather than put the old man in jail, they should put out an appeal for young, strong volunteers to clean the man's yard for him, if he wants to have it cleaned.

where he is being held without bail for 30 days — or until he cleans up the clutter.

Sounds like something out of debtors prison from Dicken's London.

A lot of places will just cite you a time or two then the city/county will clean it up and bill you.

From the story:

" he has refused to allow an inmate work crew from the county sheriff's office onto his property "

He also refused to let his family help. My sympathy level dropped after reading the story.

From the article:

Friends and family members said they are shocked that the city didn't choose an alternate solution. It's common for cities to send out a work crew to clean up a problem site, then bill the owner for the labor through property taxes.

"South St. Paul is reluctant to do that to people," Land said. "They're very reluctant to force themselves on property owners.... They feel that it would be an invasion of people's private property."

Much better to stick them in jail.

I'm sure that evertone feels much safer now that this 80+ violent person is in jail instead of someone who whould kill you as soon as loook at you.

I guess. I went to the site but didn’t go to the trouble to bugmenot-up a user/pass.

Jail isn’t the end of the world, depending.

Years (and decades) ago, I got stuffed in jail for 30 days for failure to appear for traffic tickets. They weren’t even my tickets. They were my cousin’s tickets but we looked almost identical and they thought I was him.

I never corrected them. I was young, dopey, unemployed, and didn’t have anything better to do so I just kept my mouth shut.

It was sort of Mayberry RFD-like. Jail only had three cells. All breakfasts were from a local cafeteria. Lunches would vary depending on which food joint had specials on a given day. Wednesday was Sonic burgers with ‘tater tots. Thursday (Friday?) was Pizza Hut personal pan pizza day. Belt-busters from the DQ on Monday...

It wasn’t bad. They’d let you out anytime to shower or use the restroom in the police locker room. You’d return and shut your cell door behind you. The entire time only two other people were held there. They were in the process of being transferred to the county jail.

No TV, but it was air conditioned and had a ton of old Louis L’Amour books.

They sentenced me to 30 days, but somehow it became 28. They let me loose after 9.

In hindsight I’d like that deal now. Eat, read, sleep… eat some fried chicken and biscuits and corn on the cob, read some more, shower, lounge, eat. Granted, it was no Los Angeles County jail – and I have no idea what Twin Cities is like, but it wasn’t the end of the world the one time I was in jail.

My husband's dad died over 12 years ago and we are still cleaning up the junk behind his barn.

When my father-in-law passed away I had the job of cleaning up his mess. It took me 6 months of constant hauling. Old AC units, wood (rotted),more old wood, more junk, old TVs, old radios, more old wood, rusted tin, all stuff he was going to work on as soon as he got a chance. He never got the chance.
I found lots of snakes and rats in the mess also.

Caltex needs to live next to a person who has a REALLY bad collection habbit. After seeing lots of rats invading your property from his you might have a change of opinion.

One of the neighbors got into trouble when the 55 gal barrels he has had for years rusted through and oil and other nasty stuff started polluting the area around his property.

How can he clean up the clutter, if he's locked in jail?
I was going to ask that.

We don't live close by so the constant hauling ability has been limited. But when we go to the farm we use a friend's flat bed truck and a front end loader to clean. Seems to go on and on. At least the field behind the barn is down to two cars and a truck bed now. I think his dad would go to farm auctions and just bring everything home because it was so cheap.
