Strange Colorful Cloud Forms Over Metroplex (Dallas-FTWorth
Posted on 07/21/2005 12:38:04 PM PDT by PaulaB
-- A weird-looking cloud sporting the colors of the rainbow appeared to many in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex early Thursday afternoon. The cloud stayed in the southeastern sky for several minutes, but was obscured by other clouds at times.
NBC 5 Meteorolgist James Aydelott offered one possible explanation, saying that the sun was hitting the cloud at just the right angle, similar to a phenomenon known as "sun dogs," causing the colorful display. He also said he had never seen a cloud like this before.

"Okay, Beatrice. There was no alien, and the flash of light you saw in the sky wasn't a UFO. Swamp gas from a weather balloon was trapped in a thermal pocket and refracted the light from Venus."

We get iridescent clouds all the time here in Colorado, and sometimes iridescent contrails. I think that's an iridescent contrail from a jet turning in a loop, hence the curved shape. (I don't think it's a arc of iridesence within the larger cloud.) If you put on dark sunglasses and look at the edges of clouds the sun is presently behind or near, you will see lots of iridescent places in the clouds - it isn't rare.

I have been lucky enough to see one like that driving through Utah somewhere between SLC and St George. It was so beautiful, we had to pull over and stop.
Someone once explained this phenomena to me, atmospheric crystals or some such thing, I can't remember now. lol

From the looks of it, I would say a plane dumped a load of blue ice that refracted the sun's rays.
