Its down to the wire. The U.S. House of Representatives will vote on the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA)the Dominican Republic-Central American Free Trade Agreementby July 28.
CAFTA is a regional agreement between the U.S. and six Central American countries: Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and the Dominican Republic. CAFTA is another flawed trade deal that will sell out America's jobs and do nothing to pull people out of poverty in Central America and the Dominican Republic.
Like its predecessor, the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), CAFTA promises to help the United States economy and reduce poverty and inequality. Not so! In the case of NAFTA, the U.S. lost nearly one million jobs and Mexican workers now earn less in real terms than they did before NAFTA.
CAFTA lacks real workers rights protectionsbut it offers plenty of trade breaks to companies operating in countries that violate workers' rights. The big winners from this deal will be the corporations that profit from moving our jobs offshore while taking advantage of exploited Central American workers.
There is still time to stop CAFTAbut not much time.
Please urge your U.S. representative to vote CAFTA down.
Wha'dya know. Even a stopped clock is right twice a day...
Am I awake, or is this a dream?
Any word from the Film Actors Guild?
You beat me to it. Funny how Life immitates art.
I thought it was the "Film Actors Guild". Or FAG for short.
I've urged my representatives to support CAFTA. Since they're not nutjobs, I'm sure they will.
"Gentlemen, we've got to protect our phony, baloney jobs!" -Mel Brooks in "Blazing Saddles"
You know, I'm an AFTRA-SAG member and I just don't understand why the creeps who "run" the union could be against CAFTA. Or...as Homer Simpson would say: "Actors, what don't they know!"
Because it's the leftist thing to do?
Well, even a blind pig finds an acorn once in a while!
Who's the nice-looking lady with the revealing frock on #10? Good Lord, is she the head of my union? Mama mia, atsa spicy meatah-ball!
Leftist thing to do? Yeah, you're probably right about that one. They are one large group of knee-jerks.
Our Oklahoma Reps are supporting and with SAG against, I think they are correct.
Indeed, that is Melissa Gilbert, the president of SAG. They may have to change the acronym if she's there much longer.
Wow, I am shocked.
"Matt Damon!"
I can save them some money right now! SAG should encourage filmmakers to shoot in Oregon where taxes and expenses would be minimal. The Governor is trying to sell his State on Hollywood.
DreamWorks and Spielberg just shot "The Ring II" there.
