Is it really a true, verifyable fact that 15,000 people died in France during last summer's heat wave? Where can I find the information?

Is it really a true, verifyable fact that 15,000 people died in France during last summer's heat wave? Where can I find the information...Two weekends ago C-Span carried a review of a new book called Vile France by somebody Boyles which detailed the whole sad story - can't vouch for the 15000 number but it was well up into the thousands - several physicians had warned of the impending problem but all French high officials were on their summer holidays and didn't want to hear anything about what was going on until the bodies started to pile up - and the same physicians had warned of a similar possibility this summer......

It's true. And if I remember correctly the majority of them were their elderly. And old chirac didn't even come back from his vacation beacuse of it. Why should he interrupt his vacation for a bunch of dead people...they weren't going anywhere.
And yet...they slam us.
