This just in on Fox News Channel: James Doohn, "Scotty" of Star Trek, has passed away due to pneumonia and complications from Alzheimer's Disease.

James Montgomery Doohan (born March 3, 1920, died July 20, 2005) was a Canadian actor and linguist best known for his portrayal of Scotty in the television and movie series Star Trek.

Doohan was born in Vancouver, British Columbia; his family later moved to Sarnia, Ontario where he attended high school at "SCITS," Sarnia Collegiate Institute and Technical School and excelled in math and science.

During World War II, he participated in the invasion of Juno Beach on D-Day as a captain with the Royal Canadian Artillery. In the battle, he lost the middle finger of his right hand. Returning from the war, Doohan started his acting career with a CBC radio show appearance on January 12, 1946.Wikipedia

My favorite Scotty moment was in the "Star Trek 3" movie, when they all went back to 20th century SF.

He's showing the metallurgists how to make transparent aluminum, and he walks over to a Mac on someone's desk, picks up the mouse and utters the immortal line "Hello, computer!"

I almost wet my pants laughing so hard at that one!

In a 1998 interview, Doohan was asked if he ever got tired of hearing the line "Beam me up, Scotty." "I'm not tired of it at all," he replied. "Good gracious, it's been said to me for just about 31 years. It's been said to me at 70 miles an hour across four lanes on the freeway. I hear it from just about everybody. It's been fun."

Scotty was an icon to geeks and space nuts everywhere. He'll be missed. He took the character of Scotty and made him a true original.

Rest in Peace, James. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family and loved ones.
