I disagree with a lot of what this guy says, but his response directed specifically at Mathes is on target:

"So what we should do is release them. Is that what you are saying? :-D"

Absolutely not. In reality that is what is happening though because of prison overcrowding. Legislators are constantly passing new laws to let people out earlier and earlier because we simply cannot afford to keep building new prisons. Our system is in dire need of an overhaul. The explosion in prison population growth is bankrupting states like mine. Our jails are overflowing making it such that at least in my county judges handling misdemeanors can't even put people in jail who should go to jail because the jail is full, largely with people who have been sentenced to prison but not transported yet to Dept. of Correction facilities because there is no room for them. We're in a crisis situation here.

Our prison resources are limited resources. We need to be smarter about how we use them. One thing I think we need to do is move away from letting emotion dictate our criminal justice policies and take a more scientific approach. Legislators are always passing new laws criminalizing more and more conduct. They are always increasing penalties for crimes and adding new sentence enhancements. They do this because it's easy for them to pass these things and it scores them brownie points with voters who are upset over this and that demanding that their elected representatives do something. The new laws are not rooted in science, only emotion. No though really goes into whether the laws will work or not or whether the sanctions imposed on offenders will make any difference. People just seem to think that the longer the sentences the better. All these criminals will be to afraid to offend.

We should be looking at what types of criminals are actually the greatest threat to society, which are most likely to re-offend, what other approaches we might take with people who violate laws but are not a great threat to innocent people, and so on while we formulate better criminal justice policies. We should be conducting studies, consulting social scientists, psychologists, criminal justice experts, and so on, and our legislators, prosecutors and judges should be looking more at the science in an attempt to make better use of our limited resources.

This is way off topic so as much as I'd like to I'm not going to go deeper into it. I work in the criminal justice system and deal with it's shortcomings on a daily basis. I'm frustrated with what I see.

Muslim believe in something that is the polar opposite of Christianity. Example:

Muslim works to get to heaven vs Christian grace to get to heaven

Muslim conversion by man vs Christian conversion by spirit

Muslim "moon god" vs Christian "son god"

Muslim "Allah's will" vs Christian "free choice"

Mohammad on the other hand - himself was unpure and has created a religion based not on love, but cruelty to nonbelievers. And, that god will attract all that worship at the altar of depravity, cruelty, torture, and death to others.

It may or may not be old news but it is relevant...

A couple hours ago, I was watching George the President on tv...As usual he was talking about his WOT...

When he made the statement that a few radical muzlims are terrorizing people and these few muzlims have distorted the meaning of the koran and are doing serious harm to the GREAT religion of Izlam, I had to walk away from the tv...

Pathetic...Pitiful...

Post 20   Thanks for the background.

Personally, I've seen this "shocking new revelation" come out on the Freerepublic more times than the NYT has 'discovered' Bush's National Guard record.  Just the same, but it's good when someone like yourself goes to the trouble to respond so that the new guys can be let in on the joke.

I think that it does not matter if this is old news, for it needs to be told to those who have missed out. I have studied Islam, and I do believe that most who are not Muslim can understand this for is seems so inhumane, but this is for real. Muslims have actually come out of the Dark Ages like this with no respect for human life. It is hard for an outsider to understand how people living today and be such savages.

I studied Islam because I had a question that I wanted answered, and the question was "Why would anyone in their right mind believe in Islam?

Muslims have their beliefs all waiting for them if they have a Muslim father, that little baby has no choice but to be a Muslim, and then the Muslim countries enforce this and they have great penaltys for leaving Islam or denoucning Mohammed. Islam is not a system of free will, and Islam is a brain washing scheme from the cradle to the grave.

If we have been born free, we really need to thank God, over and over again. The God of the bible is not the god of Mohammed, the one who passes out 72 hooris for each man to have sex with , (perpetual virgins) in Mohammed's Paradise.

I agree the story needs to be told but I am just bored with this particular story as I have seen it many times here and in various chain-emails.

BTW, I agree that Islam is a cult and that it seems that more people are waking up to that fact than ever before. This is why the MSM is pushing the "peaceful Muslim" angle lately.

Like I said the only thing prisons are good for is keeping the really bad people away from the rest of us. They do not make people sent there better people. Generally they come out worse than when they went in. They make new criminal contacts, learn knew criminal skills and most seem to come out more hardened criminals with worse criminal attitudes. Around 70% who are released from prison will be rearrested on new felony charges within three years of their release. The other 30% may be just not getting caught. Statistics show that we have something like 2.1 million people in state and federal prisons but really more than that go every year because so many just spend a few months in prison and then are paroled only to be replaced by others only there for a short time. The prison system in this country is already bursting at the seams. There is no way we could keep all of these people a lot longer, although the best thing for us would be to keep some of the dangerous people and career criminals in a lot longer. I say we just need to get smarter and send less there in the first place but keep the ones we do send a lot longer. We need to figure out other ways to deal with most of these others rather then send them somewhere for a few months or a year or two (at great expense to the rest of us) that is just going to turn them into worse criminals.

If you're going to fix the problem, really fix the problem. If the recidivism rate is so high, then for all perps sentenced to 15 years or more, convert the sentence into a death penalty and get them away from us for good.

Our problem is not too many people in prison, it's that we coddle too many people in prison. Prison is not a rehabilitation facilty, it's a place where people are punished. It should be as unpleasant as possible.

Nope, I was personally aware of and familiar with the UPS uniforms sold on Ebay urban legend and the resulting investigations when they occurred in Dec 02-Jan 03 months before it was an urban legend and they got around to investigating.

The first Snopes "debunking" article was wildly inaccurate and mostly quoted lies from ebay corporate.

It wasn't until after WorldNetDaily.com wrote an article on it in May 03 that they updated (July 03) to be more in line with actual facts.

They were so far off the mark on such a simple story that I realized that everything they wrote was now suspect.

Neither article discloses much, but in general I can tell you that Ebay corporate tells lies even when the truth is good news and that UPS corporate is upstanding, proactive and responsible, but they'll both deny everything ;-)

"Our problem is not too many people in prison, it's that we coddle too many people in prison. Prison is not a rehabilitation facilty, it's a place where people are punished. It should be as unpleasant as possible."

This nonsense about prisoners being coddled so much is more urban myth than anything else. I know in my state most prisons are prison farms where they make people work. I've been to several of these facilities. They are overcrowded, extremely unpleasant places to be. We're a poor southern state and we have to spend as little as possible per inmate so these place are anything but country clubs. They work in the sweltering heat and often sleep in nothing more than unshaded tin shacks with nothing coming close to resembling air conditioning. Homosexual rape and other physical assaults are common. No one ever wants to go back. I've seen them cry their eyes out at the prospect of just going there for a few months. I deal with people who are incarcerated all the time and while I've heard horror story after horror story from them I've never had one that said he liked prison or wanted to go back. Most of them are terrified of it and while the fear of going to prison might not stop many from continuing to commit crimes, they'll weasel like crazy to try to stay out after they've been caught.

You can say our problem is not that we have too many people in prison, but the reality is that is a major problem for us. It is costing us an absolute fortune and there seems to be no end in sight to the prison population explosion. Both the actual number of inmates and the per capita percentage of people incarcerated compared to the general population have zoomed up several times what they _ever_ were before things started to get out of hand in the late 1970's. We now really and truly do have more people locked up behind bars than Russia, China, or any other country in the world. We do have the world's highest per capita incarceration rate. We send people to prison left and right, often for stupid little things, and we are paying through the nose to do this, feeding all these people, providing them shelter, medical care, and so on.

Maybe we do need to execute more folks. We sure need to do something because we can't continue things the way we've been doing them the last close to thirty years. Somehow we need to get incarceration rates down because what were doing now is costing us a fortune, turning people into more hardened criminals with more criminal contacts and ties to organized crime, and it is helping in the recruitment effort for the Muslims who have set up shop in our prisons pretending to care about these people they are recruiting. We're going to really regret this someday. It is not conservative. It is a complete departure from the way things used to be. Anyone who tells you different doesn't know what he's talking about.

29 myths about "peaceful" Islam debunked
That’s what one "peaceful" Muslim said about Robert Spencer
on an Islamic website -- because Spencer dares to tell the
unvarnished truth about Islam. Get that truth in
The Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam (and the Crusades) --
yours FREE, with a risk-free subscription to HUMAN EVENTS.

Dear Fellow Conservative,

Since the attacks of 9/11, numerous books have tried to explain the religion in whose name the terrorists acted. Most of them strike a common theme: "True" Islam -- as opposed to the hijackers' "extremist" version -- promotes peace, justice, freedom, and tolerance.

The problem with this argument is that it is false -- and therefore dangerous -- since it blinds us to the true nature of the enemy we face.

But now, in The Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam (and the Crusades), Islam expert Robert Spencer reveals what all these other books conceal about Islam -- and about the Crusades that were the Western world's long-delayed response to centuries of Muslim aggression.

We at HUMAN EVENTS think this book is so important to the survival of our nation and civilization, we're giving it away for free!

That's right. Just for trying HUMAN EVENTS today, I'm making you this special offer:

Your own FREE hardcover copy of The Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam not found in stores!

Exposing myth after myth of the "Islam means peace" establishment, Robert Spencer, in The Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam tackles all the hot-button issues regarding Islam and the Crusades, including:

Mohammed: the "Perfect Man"? That's how Muslims regard him. Details about his character and in Mohammed's career of bloody conquest that make him a dangerous role model

The roots of Islamic terrorism and violence in the Koran

The Crusades: not acts of unprovoked aggression by Europe against the Islamic world, but a delayed response to centuries of Muslim aggression

The stifling effect Islam has on science and free inquiry, accounting for its failure to prosper -- and hence of its murderous envy of the West

How the much-ballyhooed (and grossly exaggerated) "Golden Age" of Islamic culture was largely inspired by non-Muslims

The ghastly lure of Islam's X-rated Paradise for suicide bombers and jihad terrorists

How Mohammad ordered -- and rejoiced in -- the assassinations of his enemies. How he lied and broke treaties as a matter of course

Islamic law: how it institutionalizes oppression of Christians, Jews and other non-Muslims in Islamic societies

How the Koran and Islamic law treat women as nothing more than possessions of men

Islam's only overarching moral principle: "if it's good for Islam, it's right"

Why Western leaders who think non-Muslims can "win hearts and minds" among Islamic jihadists are naïve

Why modern-day jihad warriors despise democracy and will do all they can to resist it
Robert Spencer is a regular contributor to HUMAN EVENTS, as an expert on Islam, and now you can get his latest (and best) book for free with this pre-publication offer!

In HUMAN EVENTS, you will see today's most important questions reported on from the standpoint of what really happened and why it happened -- a reporting approach that is an anathema to the relentlessly liberal "advocacy journalists" in the mainstream media.

Does it sound like honest, straightforward journalism to you? Good. Because it is truly remarkable how much truth can be uncovered by an honest investigation of the facts.

For example:

** You have surely heard of George Soros and his deep-pocketed support of left-wing causes. But did you know there is another billionaire supporter of the Left?

HUMAN EVENTS readers know who he is and despite his Howard Hughes-like reclusiveness, HUMAN EVENTS uncovered the truth and the surprising causes he has spent tens of millions supporting

** WHICH segment of the American public is most devoted to unlimited abortion rights? Is it young women? Mothers of young women? WRONG.

HUMAN EVENTS reveals the sad, but instructive, truth. The biggest backers of abortion are single men aged 18 to 34.

** WHO published a guide that gives Mexicans advice on how to illegally enter the U.S.?

HUMAN EVENTS reports the answer. It's a shocker. A Mexican state government published the 87-page book, accompanied by a DVD, which includes advice on choosing the safest routes through Arizona, California and Texas.

** WHY was it so easy for that Atlanta courthouse killer to overpower and wrestle a gun from a deputy and then use it to kill a judge and two other people?

HUMAN EVENTS offers the simple truth. It happened so easily because the killer weighed 200 pounds, was known to have a violent history -- and his guard was a 5-foot-tall grandmother. Not wanting to incur the wrath of feminists, the media played this fact down.

** HOW is the media ignoring the real scandal hanging over the Dan Rather "Memogate" forgery?

HUMAN EVENTS reports the obvious truth. CBS, Dan Rather and, quite possibly, big-time Democrat Party operatives, got a pass from investigators. All the investigating bodies have refused to take the logical next step -- which is to pursue the actual forger. (Imagine if Fox News had aired a similar smear about John Kerry -- the media would still be scouring the ends of the earth seeking the forger!)

Every time you open HUMAN EVENTS, I am sure you will be thankful for a news source that brings you the straight facts and will keep you one-up and a step ahead. From recent issues:

FACT: The top 50% of income earners pay 96.5% of the federal income taxes, while the lowest 44% pay no federal income taxes.

FACT: The federal government -- with your tax dollars -- subsidizes programs for kids to play golf at posh resorts

FACT: Federal employees spent $16.4 billion in 2003 on government charge cards. Some of those charges included: country club fees, personal clothing, movie gift certificates and beer

FACT: A recent national survey found that Democratic professors outnumber Republican professors 3 to 1 in economics, 28 to 1 in sociology, and 30 to 1 in anthropology.

FACT: During a study on the competency of teachers, half the teachers failed a qualifying verbal and math test

FACT: At least 1,074,000 illegal aliens were arrested along the Mexican border in 2004, more than 2003 and 2002.

As you might guess, the establishment press does not like HUMAN EVENTS one bit. You see, we interfere with their "good works."

We report what people actually do and say -- no matter what their politics.

And we have the best writers in the business. Regular columnists such as Phyllis Schlafly, Thomas Sowell, Walter Williams, Ollie North, Terry Jeffery, Linda Chavez, David Limbaugh, Bob Novak, Larry Elder, Michelle Malkin and Cal Thomas give you an insider's view of what's going on behind Washington's closed doors.

-- Editor Terry Jeffrey uses sound logic like a brain surgeon uses his scalpel. Liberals wake up to find their pathological prevarications scattered all over Terry's operating-room floor.

-- Decorated combat veteran Ollie North, fighting with his pen these days in HUMAN EVENTS, proves again and again why liberals simply cannot be trusted to defend America.

-- Phyllis Schlafly, the brilliant, principled, articulate, tireless and, most important, absolutely fearless opponent of wacky liberal ideas, is always right.

-- Michelle Malkin confounds liberals because she is the daughter of Filipino immigrants and has the audacity not to be liberal, and she exposes bureaucratic incompetence, especially in the vital area of immigration, as the Keystone Kops farce that it is.

-- And then there are Thomas Sowell, Armstrong Williams, Larry Elder and Walter Williams. If you want a definition of bravery in today's America, I give you just two words -- black conservative. Truly, you will not find four more eloquent and courageous columnists anywhere than these guys.

Now you know why I think you need HUMAN EVENTS.

There's so much at stake today. America is at war and liberals just don't get it. Never has it been more important for you to get the truth -- and not the P.C. pabulum that filters through the establishment media.

And now you can try HUMAN EVENTS with this special introductory offer -- a full 35-week trial subscription at the reduced rate of just $39.95... a little more than a dollar an issue.

That's a saving of more than $30 off the regular rate -- and you'll also receive as a FREE gift a hardcover edition you won't find in the bookstore of...

The Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam
(and the Crusades)

When PC propagandists assure us that jihadist terror doesn't reflect "true," "peaceful" Islam, they're not only wrong, they're dangerous -- because in doing so they lull America into letting its guard down against. And not only do self-appointed "experts" get Islam itself wrong -- they have also replaced the truth about Christian Europe and the Crusades with an all-pervasive historical fantasy that is designed to make you ashamed of your own culture and heritage -- and thus less determined to defend it. But now there's a remedy: in The Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam (and the Crusades), Robert Spencer reveals all the disturbing facts about Islam and its murderous hostility to the West that other books ignore, softpedal -- or simply lie about.

Now is your chance to reserve your copy of this groundbreaking book -- in a hardcover edition you won't find in the stores -- absolutely FREE!

And here's another bonus! You can more than double your saving by subscribing for 70 weeks, for only $69.95 -- less than a dollar a week -- and also receive as a gift...

The New York Times bestseller...
The Politically Incorrect Guide to American History

The Politically Incorrect Guide to American History is a handy one-volume fast-reading guide to our nation's glorious past that has one key advantage over today's PC history books: this one tells you what really happened -- not what liberals wish had happened.

At last patriotic Americans have an antidote to the PC nonsense riddling most American history books that make false claims like: FDR's New Deal worked, the Reagan years were the "Decade of Greed" and the Civil War was just about slavery.

This is a MUST-READ that is yours FREE, just for trying HUMAN EVENTS risk-free.

Order now -- or call HUMAN EVENTS toll-free at 1-888-GO-RIGHT for fastest service. You'll get a chance to look at HUMAN EVENTS on a no-risk, trial basis.

And, if you're dissatisfied with HUMAN EVENTS for any reason, you may cancel your subscription and receive a 100% refund within the first three months of your subscription term. After that, you will receive a full refund on all unfulfilled issues. (Of course, the FREE gifts are yours to keep.)

Maybe someday all newspapers will be as honest and up-front as HUMAN EVENTS. And maybe someday liberals will open their eyes to the threats against our country. But you can't wait for that. Who can, with all that's going on in the world?

Besides, I think you'll thrive with HUMAN EVENTS. After all, there's a certain cachet to reading a publication that is damned by liberal elites who increasingly resemble the idle degenerates who once populated the Czar's court.

Frankly, not everyone has the courage to read HUMAN EVENTS. It is far easier to just swallow what the establishment media dish out and nod in agreement with the bovine herd. Sad but true.

But I think you're exceptional. You have the courage to think for yourself. You've read this far, haven't you? Why not take the next step? Just return the card and try HUMAN EVENTS for yourself.

But please don't delay. There is only one way to claim your free hardcover copy of The Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam (and the Crusades) and get the straight news you need!
