I tend to agree with your comments about the press.

Whereas the events at Gitmo and Abu Gharib themselves are quite unpalatable, these things happen in war.

That much said, the press needs to be as thoroughly responsible and controlled as it was during WWII.

The only thing which I blame Bush for not doing is for actually challenging the American public after 9/11.

He told people to go shopping and that left a sour taste in my mouth.

We should have either put 30 million boots on the ground or begun a Manhattan project to switch away from oil.

We did not mobilize society like WWII and therefore the press doesn't get it either. But the threat is the same.

"...and therefore the press doesn't get it either...."

Does the press ever get it?

I believe the threat from islam today is greater than the threat we faced in Imperial Japan and the Third Reich. The reasons are numerous. First, and foremost, the availability of nuclear weapons on the black market. In 1941, neither Japan nor Germany had nukes, but we're not sure today whether or not our muslim enemy has them. If so, you can be sure they will use them in our cities. Second, the ocean buffer no longer is there. Air travel can place muslim enemies in CONUS, if they are already not here. Third, political correctness in our society does not permit the government to clearly identify the enemy, much less to begin rounding up, confining, and ultimately deporting them in mass numbers. Fourth, against whom or where do we retaliate in the event of a nuclear detonation within CONUS? Do we obliterate Tehran, Baghdad, Damascus, Cairo, Riyadh, Islamabad, Mecca, Medina, or any or all of the above? How much nuclear damage to the world will we be willing do create? Nuclear radiation and fallout do not respect borders or states, so what are we left with to fight?

We are facing a stateless, faceless enemy more than 1 billion strong that is raised from birth dedicated to our submission to its 12th Century ways. We are not mobilized nor on any sort of war footing as we were starting on December 7th, 1941. The citizenry, except for a small proportion, are not involved and likely do not realize the danger we face as a nation and a society. Unless our President makes this clear, and exhorts us into action, we will be in trouble. This enemy is patient, thinks in terms of centuries, is implacable, has the means, and will have the wherewithal to do us in if we do not vanquish it first.

You are so correct in this statement. And I think it is still time to do a Manhattan style project to end our foreign oil dependence.
