GOOD LUCK, MR. ROBERTS (Schumer acting positively thuggish about distinguished nominee)
NY POST ^ | July 20, 2005 | EDITORIAL

Posted on 07/20/2005 4:52:28 AM PDT by Liz

.....President Bush broke with precedent: It was the first-ever prime-time announcement of a presidential pick for the high court. .......guaranteeing that Americans would be introduced to his choice on his terms — politically, a very smart idea.

We expect that the nation will like what it sees.

For Judge Roberts appears to be a most intriguing choice. A member of the DC Circuit Court of Appeals, he has one of the most distinguished — and broad — resumes of any recent nominee.

He served as associate counsel to former President Ronald Reagan and deputy solicitor general for George H. W. Bush. In private practice, he has represented welfare recipients pro bono.

Liberals, meanwhile, fear that Bush is indeed delivering another Scalia or Thomas — but without a record to attack.

Upon his nomination to the circuit court, 152 members of the DC bar wrote the Senate Judiciary Committee on his behalf, explaining that he was "one of the very best and most highly respected appellate lawyers in the nation, with a deserved reputation as a brilliant writer and oral advocate."

He was subsequently passed through that committee with bipartisan support 16-3 (with NY's Chuck Schumer and Ted Kennedy of Massachusetts voting in the minority).

Then the full Senate confirmed him by unanimous consent.

.....Schumer — as chairman of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee — spends most of his time these days demonizing Republicans, the better to raise money to run Democrats against them come next year.

Yesterday, though, he got positively thuggish about it.

"The burden is on a nominee to the Supreme Court to prove that he is worthy, not on the Senate to prove he is unworthy," said Schumer — pretty much turning on its head the Senate's constitutional responsibility to "advise and consent" on court nominations.

Yup, lefties are gonna be frazzled knowing Scalia is also a Catholic, and at the press conference when Justice Thomas was nominated, the very first words out of his mouth into the mic was to thank "the nuns who taught" him.

Didn't the Prez promise to nominate judges on the order of Scalia and Thomas?

Hey, I'm less concerned about Schumer acting thuggish (which is to be expected of a thug) than I am about his acting sluggish. I fear the lib/dems will delay, delay, and delay on this one.

Chuck Schumer is just being....Chuck Schumer. A bigot and racist, who cannot see his own reflection, and totally without any generosity in his nature. "My way or the highway" seems to be his guiding principle.

Things could be worse. Chuck COULD be a leading contender for the Presidency, as the Democrats have a tendency to select thoroughly unpleasant people to represent them on the national stage.

The burden of being Charles Schumer is to keep a large number of irascible interest groups happy who fund him. He's become a specialist in spiking judicial appointments. It's the entire reason NARAL keeps him on payroll.

I wonder how many of the lawyers in Con-gress have done that?

Ah, give him a break. After all, it is tough being the "Junior" Senator from NY.

We should WISH the Dems would nominate Schumer for pres. and not the other senator from NY. I think he would carry exactly one state.

Tim Russert last night said all 55 GOP senators would support Roberts. I hope that is correct. If so, then they would just need 5 Dems to thwart a filibuster. Russert seemed to think they would do that. I think perhaps only the farthest left Dems will vote to oppose Roberts.

I take every comment from Democrats criticizing this judge as confirmation that Bush got it right. The more bitter they are, the better.

I would be worried if they didn't complain!

Judge Roberts

Ring my friend I said you’d call Judge Roberts,
Day or night he’ll be there anytime at all,
Judge Roberts,
Judge Roberts, you’re a new and better man,
He helps you to understand,
He does ev’rything he can, Judge Roberts.
If you are down he’ll pick you up, Judge Roberts,
Take a drink from his special cup, Judge Roberts,
Judge Roberts, he’s a man you must believe,
Helping ev’ry one in need,
No-one can succeed like Judge Roberts.
Well, well, well, you’re feeling fine,
Well, well, well, he’ll make you, Judge Roberts.
My friend works with the National Health,
Judge Roberts,
Don’t pay money just to see yourself with
Judge Roberts,
Judge Roberts, you’re a new and better man,
He helps you to understand,
He does ev’rything he can, Judge Roberts.
Well, well, well, you’re feeling fine,
Well, well, well, he’ll make you Judge Roberts.
Ring my friend I said you’d call
Judge Roberts.

(with apologies to Lennon & McCartney)

Chuckie Schumer is shooting blanks on this one. The more he rags on John Roberts the worse Chuckie will look. Chuckie Schumer is a DONK hitman/thug who is doing the only thing he knows how to do. He's on automatic and will be smacked down if he (unwisely) persists.

Schumer is the senior Senator from NY dammit!! Thus resents Hillary getting so much attention. So here's Chuckie's chance to get some.

Chuckie's doing the only thing he knows how to do. To do his Mafia capo/thug/hitman routine. He will come out of this looking much worse than John Roberts who the Senate heartily approved for a Federal judgeship a scant two years ago.

John G. Roberts: Born in Buffalo, NY -- Moved to Indiana when he was only in Grade Two.

Where have all the bright ones gone?
Long time passing
Where have all the bright ones gone?
Long time ago
Where have all the bright ones gone?
Gone to Red States every one
When will Dems ever learn?
When will they ever learn?

Did you see who voted against his confirmation to the job he holds now? Kennedy, Reid and Durbin! All other Senators, Rep. and Dem. voted for him!
