We are getting off topic, but New Englanders tend to drop their "r's" because the Puritans who settled the place (Hahvahd Yahd = Harvard Yard), tended to be Cromwell types, and the locus of support for Cromwell was in East Anglica (around Cambridge), in England, and they don't pronounce their "r's" there. Whole congregations moved from East Anglica to New England.
