WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States has apologized to a prominent Britain-based Muslim scholar for denying him entry to the country last week, and has given him a new U.S. visa, the U.S. Embassy in London said on Tuesday.
Zaki Badawi, the unofficial leader of Britain's Muslims who attended talks with British Prime Minister Tony Blair on Tuesday, was the latest in a string of people who have been denied entry to the United States since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks without receiving details on the suspicions against them.
Speaking off the record, European law enforcement sources have accused the United States of overreacting in many of these cases, which have also included the former pop singer Cat Stevens, a Muslim convert now known as Yusuf Islam.

*SIGH*
I hate to say it but I hope I get old and die before the headhunters get total control of the former America.
Overreacting leads to someone with hurt feelings. Underreacting leads to a lot of dead bodies.
WTF is right!!! I was pleased when I first read about him being denied entry - I figured just MAYBE we had begun to get smart. This PC BS is absolutely mind-boggling. Don't the "powers that be" realize they are playing with lives here? OUR lives!!!
Some people just don't get it! Inconveniencing one innocent person is a lot better than overlooking one guilty one.
Like I said, Oh darn. Too bad. So sorry. Tough noogies.
Yes and I pray we continue to "overreact" while our Eurowimp friends continue to search for Muslim moderates and act like good little Dhimmis while their subways burn.
Even so-called conservatives are turning P.C. Witness the hysterical reaction to Tancredo's remarks, mentioning to obvious and legitimate deterrent threat of nuking Mecca. this has been mentioned many times by others since 9/11 without such mania. This shows how our resove is deteriorating, a very dangerous situation. Be assured our Muslim foes will never let up, never moderate in their quest for domination of the West.
Over reacting? Well KISS MY AS*, why don't you? I would rather see 10,000 legitimate Muslims denied entry rather then take the chance even 1 of them was a murdering savage. Somebody want to tell me what the loss to the entire world would be should EVERY SINGLE person of middle eastern descent suddenly disappear overnight? I'm not advocating genocide or anything of the sort. It is merely a question that asks what their relevant contribution to society is and has been over the past couple of centuries.
WTF is the word...
No chance, man, we are losing and losing fast. In 10 years there'll be more mosques than 7-11's in this country.
This is OUR country if we want to bar you from entry it's OUR choice, no freakin' apology necessary.
G*d, what has become of the "home of the brave"?
Actually all Tancredo said was that nuking Mecca was a valid response, I repeat response, to Muslims setting off nukes in the United States. IOW they get to nuke us when they choose and we get to respond, not to initiate it all.
I know what you mean. I was quite pleased when I read about Tancredo's statement. Perhaps if it had been made by Bush/Rumsfeld early on we wouldn't have as much to worry about as we do. This "religion of peace" crap is getting to be a BIT much!
There was a time when we could call the democrats the party of appeasement. It appears that they aren't alone anymore.
Dhimmitude is one the way. Just look at the reaction in the UK to the terror attacks. More platitudes about Islam being a religion of peace (despite 1400 years of history to the contrary) from the newly acclaimed Islamic theologians - Imams Tony Blair and Jack Straw.
Multiculturalist dogma must be maintained at all costs. So what if some folks have to die, it's a small price to be paid. You have to break a few eggs to make that perfect multicultural utopian omlet after all.
I am beginning to think that we are trying to lose the war on terror.
