from just reading the transcript, it seems odd that Lee failed to state how loose an ID thru mitochondrial DNA is; and also he ignored the possibility of the hairs having roots on them, which would provide a match or rule-out many many orders of magnitude more powerful than the mitochondrial could possibly provide.
I think that Lee was more interested in the duct tape because the tape could/would be the piece of evidence that would tie the perp into the crime. The results of the hair strands alone could not tie the perp into the crime. So Lee was mostly focused on the findings on the duct tape.
