I'm not blaming the kids here but I don't understand why they weren't making noise trying to be heard - especially during the first few hours.

After about an hour (which is probably before anyone even realized that they were missing), they were either unconscious or stuporous from lack of oxygen. By the time (IF EVER) they were mentally aware of the danger that they were in, they were likely unable to physically do anything about it, including making noise or trying to kick their way out of the back seat (if that possible escape route ever occurred to them).

This is why it is inexcusable for the police to have reported they they searched the car when they did not search the trunk. They should lose their jobs and get sued.
