Texas Senate/Legislative alert:
The Senate is considering the Higher Education Funding - Senate Bill 80, companion to House Bill 6 - which contains a little $41 Million dollar gift to the UTHSCH at Houston:
""(10) The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston: (A) $41 million for an adult stem cell research center at the Texas Medical Center to conduct stem cell and *******related biomedical research;
It's that "related" that is the poison pill (aside from all that money they intend to spend).
Last month, I attended the "Genetic Politcy Institute Stem Cell Advocacy Summit." It was actually a "Cloning and Embryonic Stem Cell" Summit. (Oh, and a bash Bush and every Christian or other person of faith as being stupid or having a left temporal lobe lesion that makes us "more sensitive" to religious experiences, and therefore, we must be mentally ill)
The meeting was a venue to give recognition to the veterinarian, Dr. Hwang, who has done the cloning research in South Korea. Dr. DeBakey and all the head docs and researchers at Houston, as well as some imported "experts" from California and Wisconsin, were there to make a deal with the South Korean to begin their own Texas cloning and embryonic research collaboration.
Please consider calling the Capital Switchboard to reach the Lt. Governor, the Speaker, and your Senators and Representatives to voice your opinion on a proposed amendment to Senate Bill 80 by Ogden(HB 6 by Morrison) to restrict research to ethical, adult stem cell research.
"I'm all for stem cell research, I just wouldn't kill anyone for it!"
If that url above doesn't work, try a search for hb 6 or sb 80 at http://www.capitol.state.tx.us/
Could you put this on the Announcements side bar? You can take it off in a few hours, once the vote is over.
Thanks for posting to the sidebar.
There's still time - the Senate is recessed until 4 PM.
Say no to government schools, including colleges.
