It was 36 years ago tonight when Fatboy Ted Kennedy drove his mother's Oldsmobile off the Dike Bridge into Poncha Pond. He swam to safety and left his passenger Mary Jo Kopechne trapped in the backseat to slowly drown in the rising waters of the tidal pond.

Mary Jo is still dead and Fatboy is leader of the Lunatic Left.

She's in my prayers he's not...

The back seat was higher, the way the car fell. She would have climbed into the back to keep breathing as long as possible.

Looks like AP put the item out in it's "Today in History" article, but not many carry the reference.

indystar.com

• In 1969, a car driven by Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.) plunged off a bridge on Chappaquiddick Island near Martha's Vineyard; passenger Mary Jo Kopechne died.

RedBluff, CA Daily News

In 1969, a car driven by Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.) plunged off a bridge on Chappaquiddick Island near Martha's Vineyard; passenger Mary Jo Kopechne died.

Outside the US, the story has more details, but looks like they have the year wrong:

HindustanTimes.com

Today in history

• 1968: US Senator Edward Kennedy’s car drove off a bridge on Chappaquiddick Island, Massachusetts killing his 28-year-old companion Mary Jo Kopechne. Kennedy fled the scene of the accident and received a suspended sentence of two months and one year's probation. Chappaquiddick now stands for political nemesis— a shady part of ones past that won't go away.

http://www.boston.com/news/history/articles/2005/07/17/today_in_history___july_18/ says; (apparently quoting the AP)
"In 1969, a car driven by Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.) plunged off a bridge on Chappaquiddick Island near Martha's Vineyard; passenger Mary Jo Kopechne died."

Thank you! I'm glad someone besides Howie Carr thought to remember this anniversary. (Even FNC only mentioned the burning of Rome 1,941 years ago as "this day in history"!)

Why was the girl riding in the back seat? In all the dealings with women I've ever had, I've never had one of them ride in the back seat of a car for any reason. If a woman were to ASK to ride in the back seat of my car I'd probably tell her she needed to hire a cab.

I see that picture of Teddy and keep hoping that someone with a pegleg and a harpoon would take a fancy to having his carcass mounted on a wall somewhere.......

Ted Kennedy is a cheat, liar, philanderer, murderer and demonstrably stupid: the perfect Democrat senator! The only thing missing is membership in the KKK!

Makes me so proud to live in Massachusetts! That and the other political embarrassments I have to endure!

It was TED KENNEDY for crying out loud!! Don't compare yourself to him! He was probably pawing her all evening! She probably felt safer in the back seat, from both a driving safety and virtue preservation standpoint!

Well at least Kennedy never told anybody about Valerie Plame working for the CIA. Now there's a scandal.

The only scandal is that there's anybody stupid enough to actualy believe that Rove did anything illegal.
