WASHINGTON, July 18 - Administration officials said on Monday night that President Bush's selection process for a Supreme Court nominee was moving far faster than they expected, a signal that there could be a candidate within the next few days.
They also said that Mr. Bush's remarks on Monday morning in an East Room news conference, in which the president suggested that he would take more time to interview candidates, did not rule out a quick announcement.
In that news conference with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh of India, Mr. Bush said that he was still reviewing the backgrounds of candidates and that "I will sit down with some and talk to them face to face, those who I have not known already."
Both Republicans and Democrats said that a nomination announcement in the next few days could push the news of Karl Rove and a federal investigation into who leaked the name of a C.I.A. officer off the front pages, a development that would be highly welcome at the White House. Mr. Rove, Mr. Bush's senior adviser, has been named by two reporters as a source of the leak, a potential crime.
"A nomination would certainly change the momentum in Washington," said Kenneth M. Duberstein, who managed the Supreme Court nominations of Clarence Thomas and David H. Souter for Mr. Bush's father.

In retrospect, dems find the timing of O'Connor's retirement suspicious.
Not as long as the MSM is doing the work of the DNC.
New York Slimes - getting their lying digs in wherever they see an opening.
True that. And I have to take your excerpt as accurate, since I REFUSE to read anything by Elizabetch Bumiller. (did i spell that right?)
"President Bush took time off from defending embattled political advisor Karl Rove to announce..."
"While questions remain as to whether members of his administration are lawbreakers, President Bush fanned the flames of partisan conflict by nominating..."
etc. etc. etc.
Just when the Dumbecrats thought they had Rove "on the ropes", GW will do a rope-a-dope. Actually, GW needs to make a nomination rather quickly, cuz me thinks Renquist is not much longer for this earth.
Oh, SHUT UP, Elisabeth Bumiller!
He didn't "leak the name of a C.I.A. offier", YOU IDIOT! OLD MEDIA already knew her name because her husband TOLD YOU!
It's President Bush's JOB to nominate a replacement for Justice O'Connor. It's not like when Bill Clinton (OLD MEDIA'S HERO!) claimed executive privilege about an INTERN under his desk!
I heard on a couple of news shows over night that the announcement may be as early as today........
F. Lee Levin! Wouldn't that be beautiful. Think Teddy would approve?
Surely the MSM stakes out various candidates to see if they've been called to the WH for interviews.
