CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- Former National Football League quarterback Heath Shuler plans to run for the U.S. Congress. Shuler, a Democrat, said in a statement Monday that he has filed papers with the Federal Election Commission that clear the way for him to run next year in the 11th Congressional District for the U.S. House of Representatives seat held by Republican Charles Taylor. Shuler didn't name Taylor in a press release that emphasized pocketbook issues.

Hopefully his campaign will fare no better than his time in the NFL.

I mean, I wish the guy well in life as I liked to watch him while at Tennesse, but Taylor is a good conservative.

And when 'pocketbook' issues are stressed, it is usually a way of getting around having to admit that "yes, I may claim to be against gay marriage, for Second Amendment rights, etc, but the fact is that I will be a caucasing vote for far-left radicals like Nancy Pelosi who will endeavor to crap all over the values of the people of the 11th district."

How long has it been since an athlete ran as a Democrat?

Had a foot injury beginning his pro career. Great college QB for Tennessee. WTF, with running for office? IIRC, he has a very lucrative Real Estate bidness, on top of his NFL $$

Somebory has his ear??

The Redskins blew a terribly high draft pick on this clown. D.C. area sports writers came away from an initial interview with him shaking their heads; one remarked "Sheeesh, they've just drafted Gomer Pyle..." Another noted that you only had to talk to the guy for five minutes to comprehend that he wasn't bright enough to play quarterback in the NFL, regardless of any physical skills he might have.

Foot surgery, stem.

What is interesting is who is backing this.

I can only think of Alan Page, who's a judge in MN; I'm assuming only he's a dem, probably because I saw some liberal sportswriter praise him, and J.C. Watts aside he's of a demographic that is overwhelmingly Democratic.

Mediocre is being awefully generous.

Typical. Had he kept his wheels under him, next week them hacks would have been singing his praises.

The man caught some bad luck as a player. But, I am more interested in who is touting him for office.
