A lady in a faded gingham dress and her husband, dressed in a
homespun threadbare suit, stepped off the train in Boston, and
walked timidly without an appointment into the Harvard University
President's outer office.

The secretary could tell in a moment that such backwoods, country
hicks had no business at Harvard and probably didn't even deserve to
be in Cambridge.
"We'd like to see the president," the man said softly.
"He'll be busy all day," the secretary snapped.
"We'll wait," the lady replied.

For hours the secretary ignored them, hoping that the couple would
finally become discouraged and go away. They didn't, and the
secretary greatly frustrated and finally decided to disturb the
president, even though it was a chore she always regretted.
"Maybe if you see them for a few minutes, they'll leave," she said
to him! He sighed in exasperation and nodded. Someone of his
importance obviously didn't have the time to spend with them, and he
detested gingham dresses and homespun suits cluttering up his outer
office.

The president, stern faced and with dignity, strutted toward the
couple. The lady told him, "We had a son who attended Harvard for
one year. He loved Harvard. He was happy here. But about a year ago,
he was killed.

My husband and I would like to erect a memorial to him, somewhere on
campus." The president wasn't touched. He was shocked. "Madam," he
said, gruffly, "we can't put up a statue for every person who
attended Harvard and died. If we did, this place would look like a
cemetery." Oh, no," the lady explained quickly. "We don't want to
erect a statue. We thought we would like to give a building to
Harvard." The president rolled his eyes. He glanced at the gingham
dress and homespun suit, then exclaimed, "A building! Do you have
any earthly idea how much a building costs? We have over seven and a
half million dollars in the physical buildings here at Harvard." For
a moment the lady was silent. The president was pleased. Maybe he
could get rid of them now.

The lady turned to her husband and said quietly, "Is that all it
costs to start a university? Why don't we just start our own? "

Her husband nodded. The president's face wilted in confusion and
bewilderment.

Mr. and Mrs. Leland Stanford got up and walked away, traveling to
Palo Alto, California where they established the university that
bears their name, Stanford University, a memorial to a son that
Harvard no longer cared about.

NOTE: I just received this story via e-mail and do not know if it is true.

Boy ,I wish I could be there!

I bet it is a terrific experience to witness this live.

I've seen the Roundup on the Discovery Channel or Animal Planet before and wished I could be there.:)

Good Morning Mama_Bear! Love your graphic!

Morning, Mrs.Nooseman.

Thanks, that graphic was courtesy of ST.LOUIE1 (one of the first he gave me). Most all of my really cool graphics came to me by way of him. :-)

What a great story!

Thanks for sharing it and it doesn't matter if it is true or not, because the morale of the story "DON'T JUDGE A BOOK BY IT'S COVER" ,holds true either way.

Did that really appear in a local paper? If it did, Lt. Col. Pleus deserves a medal.

Living as I did for many years in flight patterns of Dover Air Force Base, I had nothing but contempt for anyone that complained about the sound of those planes...and let me tell you, you sure as heck know a C-5 is coming over your house :)

What a neat little piece of botanical history.

I've always loved chrysanthemums, but was unaware that they were perrennials.

Hi Gabz. Always nice to see you.

Did I hear that you've been on pain medication? I've been out of touch lately and am only getting bits and pieces of news from the Finest.....missing more than I am getting, I'm sure. Hope you are doing okay now and that it was nothing serious.

Hi, big O!

Googled this story an found they are the benefactors, but nothing is said about their appearance at Harvard.

Just a nice story, I guess. : )

I am proud to be...
an American!
And proud to support our military!

You Betcha, Mama Bear! Makes me want to break out in song.

Shooting for 107 today in the northern end of The Big Valley. We may set a record this week for most consistent days over 100. Cool - Well, not really.

We get to sit around in air conditioned comfort complaining about the high electric bills we're gonna get, but our troops don't have that luxury.

May GOD Bless and Protect them, One and All is our prayer.

A most beautiful graphic, Ms LUV.

You're becoming an *expert*. : )

Billie can be very proud of all her 'students'.

Wonder what she'll teach us to do next? : )

You're right. I am blessed to be born under the protection of our Constitution and our great military. When I find myself complaining, I think about our troops in their combat gear in the searing desert heat and the dust storms, with the danger they face every minute, day and night, and being separated from their loved ones....and I realize I have nothing at all to complain about. On top of all that, they aren't paid a fraction of what they should be paid for what they are doing over there.

That being said, this heat wave we've been having could break any time, and I would be delighted. :-)
