Immigration tensions

Tensions in Farmingville over immigration flared up yesterday as Suffolk police arrested five men and one teenage girl in two seperate incidents at a busy day laborer hiring site.

In the first, classified by detectives as a hate crime, two Holtsville men threw a bottle at a day laborer, Suffolk police said. Three hours later, a heated confrontation erupted at the same location between about 20 supporters of day laborers and one resident opposed to illegal immigration.

At 6 a.m., Matthew Lindstadt, 20, and James Stern, 32, lured a laborer with the promise of work to their pickup truck parked near the 7-Eleven on Horseblock Road then threw a Budweiser bottle at him when he arrived, Bias Crimes Commander Det. Sgt. Robert Reeks said.

At 8:50 a.m., police returned to the site to look for the botttle and gather additional evidence and discovered a potential riot taking shape, police said.

Approximately 20 members of a civic organization known as Teachers for Democracy, who had gathered to show support for laborers, were angrily confronting a Farmingville man known for his opposition to illegal immigration, said Insp. Robert Ponzo, Sixth Precinct Commanding Officer.

Officers warned the pro-laborer demonstrators to keep their distance from the man, Dave Drew, one of several local residents who protests outside the convenience store six mornings a week.

The group ignored the warnings, Ponzo said.

"They decided to rush the car, pushing the sargeant out of the way," Ponzo said. No one was injured.

Encircling his car, parked outside a bank across the street, they used a bullhorn and began yelling: Racist. Racist. Racist."

"Clearly by their actions, they came out there looking for trouble," said Drew, 53, adding that he had finished peacefully protesting and was preparing to leave.

"They were not protestors," Drew said. "They were an unruly mob."

classified by detectives as a hate crime

I am STILL waiting for a definition of how assault in ALL cases is NOT a "hate crime". As for the protestors in "support of the day laborers", I wonder how many of them were paid to be there because as we all know, the leftists talk big, but rarely EVER show up in big numbers.....

"Teachers for Democracy" doesn't seem to be on the web.

Never heard of them.

It's interesting. Ceasar Chavez was and is a hero to socialists yet was well known for his opposition to illegal immigration. He recognized that an illegal workforce would undermine the labor rights of legal immigrants.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to have the foresight to understand one simple thing. When people begin to feel that their culture is being over run and disappearing, they will start to push back. Some will do things most of us would find objectionable. Do we imagine, for one minute, that if lots of us were pouring over the border into say, Saudi Arabia, expecting our culture to be welcomed and forcing the inhabitants to teach our children in our own tongue, while they pick up the tab, etc, that they would just smile and say sure?

Reached yesterday evening by telephone, Stevens did not dispute police allegations, but said Drew had been standing beside his car for several minutes filming the Teachers for Democracy demonstration with a zoom lens camera. Stevens said the group demonstrated to show support for immigrant workers. "We came to set a tone of international unity and protect worker solidarity," Stevens said. "Confronting racists face-to-face is one way of doing that."

Thesaurus Legend: Synonyms Related Words Antonyms Noun 1. racist - a person with a prejudiced belief that one race is superior to others

Stevens surmises that a man holding a camera is a racist? Amazing fete Mr, Stevens!

He recognized that an illegal workforce would undermine the labor rights of legal immigrants.

And Cesar was right! The current crop of illegals never heard of him.

Thanks for that analogy. I have serious doubts you could pick any country in the world that would be happy to bend over and accept that (except of course the US). Which brings back the age old question, why? Why are we doing this?

There was a time when we needed immigrants but we already have almost 300,000,000 people in this country. I have to wonder how many more will be enough.

I think Chavez was rather narrowly interested in his union and the fate of farm workers. His movement though was a magnet for leftists of all stripes looking for a vehicle to gain some media attention and legitimacy. Caesar's union was hijacked.

""I have nothing against them, the day laborers or anyone else," Lindstadt said. He drove off after the attack because he was scared, he said. "The fact that my name is being associated with this is making me sick to my stomach." "

Some day a number of politicians will be singing that same tune over getting caught up in the anti-Hispanic frenzy.

I hate to see a young man go through life with an anti-Hispanic hate crime on his record because he was influenced by a parent with a grudge against Hispanics.

As concerned as you are for the noble Mexican migrant laborer, you don't seem to care much for the equally noble Chinese laborer ("we don't need them" is the way you phrased it.) Rather selective in your bigotry. Huh JMO.

With the large majority of "guest workers" receiving permanent residence and citizenship you're probably right that politicians will regret being against illegal immigration and whatever amnesty gets passed.
