Tomorrow marks the 36th anniversary of Chappaquiddick, when the "conscience of the left" drove off the bridge and caused the death of Mary Jo Kopechne.
Happy anniversary, you lecherous old drunk!
And it was mostly covered up by Apollo 11.
We'll drive off that bridge when we get to it. {hic!}
Great Website You have there, will save it as a favorite. It's a definite must Visit!!!!
So did you meet up with the great-grandmother yet?
On July 26th Mary Jo Kopechne would have turned 65 years old.
Who am I kidding?
Had she survived, Mary Jo would probably have told the story of that night, revealing details that would have caused the instant disintegration of the Senator's career, and, perhaps, of the entire Kennedy image.
There is no evidence that this eventuality was on the Senator's mind as he swam, and then ran, away from the sunken car and it's still-living occupant. There is no evidence that an awareness of this probable chain of events had anything to do with his not reporting the accident to law enforcement or rescue personnel until the following morning.
(steely)
Not yet! I was at the teeny-weeny Green Zone PX a couple of days ago, but just saw the regular Iraqi staff ringing things up and a couple of fairly young AAFES employees.
There's only one other PX I can get to and it's a pretty big one. However, I have to go to that one via heavily armored convoy. Next time I go to that one, I'll look around - heck, I'll ask around.
So as all birthdays....lets send Kennedy birthday cards to Mary Jo....I know he'll love them....a few thousand should remind him of what he did....don't email them, they have to go snail mail don't they to get to him...and not his lackeys???
Except that it's got The Eewww Scary Picture down there at the bottom. ;-)
And what should have been observed as the thirtieth anniversary of Chappaquiddick in 1999 was _completely_ covered up by the deaths of John Jr, his wife and others. The timing, as with Apollo 11, was utterly uncanny.
But for intense idiocy, it doesn't get any better than Charles Pierce, who won the "Quote of the Year" [2003] hands down with this achingly perverse Chappaquiddick sentence in the Boston Globe Magazine: "If she had lived, Mary Jo Kopechne would be 62 years old. Through his tireless work as a legislator, Edward Kennedy would have brought comfort to her in her old age." Please go away, Mr. Pierce. Kennedy couldn't even bring her a life jacket.
The luck of the Irish - even the Irish who don't deserve the luck.
Sounds like my morning commute. [ba dum bum!]
Stay safe!
