Democrats called yesterday for Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael Steele (R) to cancel a fundraiser this month featuring Karl Rove, the White House deputy chief of staff under intense scrutiny in the case of a CIA official whose identity was disclosed.
"Michael Steele has to decide whether that is the kind of person who reflects his values and those of Maryland," said Phil Singer, a spokesman for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, a Washington-based group. "We urge Michael Steele to do the right thing and cancel his event."
A spokesman for Steele, who is exploring a bid for the U.S. Senate, said the July 26 fundraiser in Washington remains on his schedule. Others allied with Steele laughed off the suggestion.
"Are they afraid he's going to raise too much money?" asked GOP strategist Carol Hirschburg.
News reports in recent days disclosed that Rove discussed the role of CIA official Valerie Plame with a reporter. Rove has said he did not know Plame's name or leak it to anyone. The issue was the subject of a combative White House briefing Monday.
Steele has been heavily courted to run for the Senate seat by national Republicans, and Democrats are hopeful that his association with Rove could tarnish him in a state in which Democrats have nearly a 2-to-1 edge in voter registration.
"Presumably, if he goes through with the fundraiser, he'll have to defend ...Rove, which could cause problems down the road," said Jim Jordan, a national Democratic strategist. "If he cancels, it's a tremendous embarrassment for the White House."
Steele's office referred calls to the National Republican Senatorial Committee... Dan Ronayne, a committee official who has been acting as Steele's spokesman, said the Democrats' action "shows that they're very concerned about ...Steele. I'm sure they'd like him to cancel all his fundraisers."...

The Man of Steele won't buckle to whining Demonrats.
these dems are lock stock and ready to go. No doubt. I mean not a one out of synch on any level.
And there we have the Democratic Party platform!
These libs are mean and evil. And what makes them think they can wipe a non-story off on Rove and keep this up? They are counting on their pals in the MSM to be their sockpuppets.
crossing my fingers.
I don't suppose that Steele is too concerned about losing democratic donations.
I'm enjoy the HELL out of this; while we're here wasting our afternoon, the Dems all over the country are searching high and low for yet another way they think they can get a "gotcha" moment for every Republican in the country.
It's like hearing the DNC collectively saying "Oh, yeah? Well what about THIS?"
Where are the facts?
The party of the Ku Klux Klan shouldn't be throwing stones.
Libs new judicial philosophy*: Guilty until proven innocent.
*-note: only applies to Republicans.
Michael Steele should be our VP candidate in 2008.
I remember Steele from the convention. I hope he has some wise words from his Grandma (or was it his Mama?) from him.
They're overlooking the NYT obstruction of an investigation it demanded.
If he's the man he presented himself as during his speech at the Republican Convention last year, he'll rise to the challenge and come out a winner.
Next thing you know, they'll be demanding that Rove's wife divorce him.
ROTFLMAO!
In the meantime, we're fighting a WAR!!!!! We've got men and women out there fighting and dying. And we have Democrats not only demonizing Republicans, they're demonizing the troops!
7/7 proved that the Islaminazis are just as committed to killing non-Muslims as ever. And the Democrats are playing silly buggers!
(/rant off) Sorry...I'm just sick of this nonsense.
Or accused rapists.
I'm right with you.
But you know, look at the entertainment value: in our wildest dreams -- and with more beer than we can imagine -- on our best nights, collectively FR could not possibly MAKE THIS STUFF UP!
It's like mana from heaven!
