Dem Strategist Suggests on MSNBC that President May Be Focus of Leak Probe
MSNBC News | 07/16/2005 | MSNBC

Posted on 07/16/2005 7:55:07 AM PDT by RightFighter

On MSNBC a little while ago, they had a story about the "politics of the CIA leak". The reporter was interviewing Pat Buchanan and Democratic strategist Peter Fenn. What follows is the best transcript I could piece together quickly. I've quoted Fenn word for word.

PAT BUCHANAN: It's very, very serious...There is a credibility problem for the press secretary...There is no legal problem for Rove...Reporters in Washington have a gleam in their eye and smiles on their faces, and there's a reason for it...Pat Fitzgerald hasn't been digging for two years and judges haven't been sending reporters to jail because they don't have anything...Everyone in town (Washington) feels there is something very, very serious and today's story in the NY Times where a memo was floating around aboard Air Force One about Wilson's trip to Africa indicates this could be very big stuff.

ALEX: Peter, what kind of big stuff could Pat be referring to?

PETER FENN: Alex, this is not a third-rate burglary. The focus had been on White House staff. Now, as Pat says, with this memo from the State Department about Wilson, about his wife, about the connection, it was brought onto Air Force One by Secretary Powell. I cannot imagine, Alex, that if he's going up and down the aisles with that memo as he was supposed to have been, that he did not discuss it with the President of the United States. I cannot imagine that there were not phone calls from Ari Fleischer, the Press Secretary who was on board, back to the White House about this. This was precisely at the time when Wilson was about to publish his article. Folks knew about his position about weapons of mass destruction. I have a sense that this may go all the way to the top.

I had been reading the Rove supposedly told Chris Matthews that Valerie Plame was "fair game"...and that Chrissy was telling people that Rove said that to him...

I couldn't for the life of me believe that Rove would say anything like that to Chrissy Matthews!

My quick take: Rove's not in trouble, no crime committed. Wison/Plame, possibly in trouble for perjury/obstruction. My guess Plame's in the most trouble for misuse of office. I think she's Miller's source.

I read what you are talking about last night sometime on a thread...do you want me to help look. I think the guy you are talking about was on Fox News last night also...

Do YOU think that Rove would tell Chrissy Matthews that Valerie Plame is "fair game", or is it a lie Chrissy has been spreading?

I think you are referring to Plame's former supervisor at the CIA?

I agree with you two---

I have been thinking since the dems made such fools of themselves on the Senate floor on Thursday, that there HAS to be a darn good reason, other than their hate of Bush...

Then, I watched the Fox Business shows this morning, and all of the economic news is GREAT, but, also Bush's "numbers" go up whenever Americans are reminded of the War on Terror...

So, in the dems minds---this week WOULD have been a disaster unless they distracted the MSM--and of course the MSM loves it!!!

that's exactly right. everyone here knows the facts, so they know this story is just a bunch of lies and spin. but the average american is a sheeple who gets their news during the 5 minutes at the top of the hour. and as you say, this story is pushed as a "white house scandal". and when you have a guy like McClellan as the spokesman for the administration on this - you are guaranteed to lose the spin war. the MSM can run this story "front page" for the entire summer, and then when the truth finally comes out - that story will be on page 19.

If you have watched any C-span lately, you might notice that the Congresscritters ARE NOT in any particular hurry to close the borders....

It isn't ALL Bush you know...and I don't think your characterization of him is accurate at all...

That would be interesting.

Well, howdy! Try this on for size: Joseph Wilson went to Niger at Plame's instigation to warn Niger that they had been outed as dealing in uranium by the British, and also to cover his own tracks in the transactions.

All of this flapdoodle resulted because Wilson's cover story for why he was there got coppted by the Kerry campaign, and Wilson couldn't avoid going public with his lies.

Wilson sure was sweating at his press conference the other day. I haven't seen Karl Rove or George Bush break a sweat, yet.

By the way, welcome to FR.

And give Plame or Wilson an excuse to say they were hiding the truth? yea right!

This memo is not about who knew about it, they already know who knew about it, even though that's what the MSM wants people to think. Remember, Wilson has to this point and in interviews with MSM and possibly investigators denied that his wife played in any role in getting him the trip.

"Prosecutors in the C.I.A. leak case have shown intense interest in a 2003 State Department memorandum that explained how a former diplomat came to be dispatched on an intelligence-gathering mission and the role of his wife, a C.I.A. officer, in the trip, people who have been officially briefed on the case said."

What a ridiculous thing to even REPEAT.

Sorry there chum, I seem to have misplaced this week's list of things, ideas, concepts, and sentences that should not be repeated. I'll try to watch myself next time. Thanks...good catch.
