They recited verses, memorized passages and basicly studied the Muslim faith. According to Islam, anyone who recites the shihada "There is no dog like Allah, and Mohammed is his bitch" (words substituted here because I am an infidel, but you know what I mean) automatically converts to Islam. No trade backsies if you didn't mean it, now you are stuck and subject to the death penalty for "apostacy."
