Rove Reportedly Held Phone Talk on C.I.A. Officer

WASHINGTON, July 14 - Karl Rove, the White House senior adviser, spoke with the columnist Robert D. Novak as he was preparing an article in July 2003 that identified a C.I.A. officer who was undercover, someone who has been officially briefed on the matter said Thursday. Wilson: What I Didn't Find in Africa (July 6, 2003)

Mr. Rove has told investigators that he learned from the columnist the name of the C.I.A. officer, who was referred to by her maiden name, Valerie Plame, and the circumstances in which her husband, former Ambassador Joseph C. Wilson IV, traveled to Africa to investigate possible uranium sales to Iraq, the person said.

After hearing Mr. Novak's account, the person who has been briefed on the matter said, Mr. Rove told the columnist: "I heard that, too."

The previously undisclosed telephone conversation, which took place on July 8, 2003, was initiated by Mr. Novak, the person who has been briefed on the matter said.

Six days later, Mr. Novak's syndicated column reported that two senior administration officials had told him that Mr. Wilson's "wife had suggested sending him" to Africa. That column was the first instance in which Ms. Wilson was publicly identified as a C.I.A. operative. The column provoked angry demands for an investigation into who disclosed Ms. Wilson's name to Mr. Novak.

The Justice Department appointed Patrick J. Fitzgerald, a top federal prosecutor in Chicago, to lead the inquiry. Mr. Rove said in an interview last year that he did not know the C.I.A. officer's name and did no

Oh, I guess they are now going to try to nail Rove for saying he never talked to Novak at all, but I don't recall him ever saying that. Or they suggest that he might not ahev told the President everything. My bet is that he did, which is why the President has never wavered in his support for Karl.

Remember, the accusation that started the firestorm in 2003 was that the White House actively peddled Plame's name and relationship to Wilson in order to discredit and punish him. This was what Matt Cooper wrote about in his orignal article. This fantasy has now been completely demolished. So the next attack was that whoever "leaked" Plame's name to Novak committed a crime. Ooops, that one's out the window too.

Do they really think America is going to demand Karl Rove's head on a platter because he talked to a reporter?

Novak has been subpoenaed, and he has cooperated with Fitzgerald. That's why he isn't Judith Miller's cellmate right about now.

You mean that the NY Times is lying once again? Yes.

There is nothing to this, and the Times source for this little hit piece is no doubt Judith Miller. No one; I repeat NO ONE in the administration is talking about this. This is the media leaking to the media.

So, who is Novak's leak # 1?

Tennant or Foley. Neither is a "partisan gunslinger". Didn't Novak represent one of his sources as being familiar with the CIA?

Rove's source would've been Tennant. Or Judith Miller...

that identified a C.I.A. officer who was undercover,

I see the NY Slimes likes to get the lies out there as soon as possible...in the first paragraph.

The Left's rabid hatred of Rove and Bush has contorted their positioning to the ludicrous point where they're "outraged" at the outing of a CIA desk jockey, when they hate the CIA almost as much as they do Bush. They're unwittingly paraphrasing a line from the brilliant "Animal House" "He can't do that to our agents. Only we can do that to our agents."

A reporter for The New York Times, Judith Miller, who never wrote about the Plame case, refused to cooperate with the investigation and was jailed last week.

Interesting they should put this in there .. since she is involved somehow because she's sitting in jail for it

Also interesting the last paragraph about Rove having a say in the next USSC pick

It's Tenet. And he was fired. So guess what, folks, the President did keep his word, he did fire the real leaker.

someone who has been officially briefed

Gee, that's really informative! Note that they don't even say that this is a government official. It could be Judith Miller.

And if "someone" is vague, just consider the vagueness of "officially briefed." What the hell does that mean? Briefed by an official? Briefed while wearing his decoder ring? Briefed in an office? Called in and told to write this story by Pinch Sulzberger?

Citizen Plame. A sordid tale of a newspaper's attempt to create a mega-citizen out of whole cloth. Nothing is as it seems. And they will stop at nothing to protect...well..nothing.. Until they are spent. And alone with no anonymous sources. Or credible reporters. Or subscribers. The only sound that will be heard is a low, wimpering voice, calling quietly into the darkness: Rovebud....Rovebud...

I must be reading the article wrong, since it seems to indicate that Rove first learned of Plame's name from Novak. Wouldn't this, then, exonerate Rove of any wrongdoing?

It probably means someone in the Criminal Division of the Justice Department. Probably the same person who tipped Judy Miller off about the Holy Land Foundation. That was Fitzgerald's investigation too. Somebody at DOJ doesn't like Fitzgerald and is singing to the NYT.

Joe Wilson, and his Dem handlers, is a traitor and should be tried and, if convicted, shot.

What the article intensifies is who is the "not a partisan gunslinger" and who the reporters who told Rove are! Judith Miller?

I'm thinking so
