What should be done?
Looking under certain rocks sounds like a good idea to me.
Also, if you hear a politician tell you that he does not think Al Qaeda has a nuclear bomb because if they did, they would have used it already, vote for someone else.

You should worry if your doctor says:
"Don't worry about your health, I can assure you that you do not have cancer. I did not complete a single test to see whether or not you have cancer, but I know that you do not have cancer because if you did, you would be dying right now and you are obviously not dying right now, so you certainly don't have cancer. That will be $100.00, please. Where shall I send the bill?"

What type of maintenance would they require and what skill set would be needed to maintain the nuke? - Thanks

You should worry if your cook says:
"Don't worry, I can assure you that your neighbor has not poisoned your food supply."
"Although I know that your neighbor has publicized his intent to kill you by any means necessary, including by poisoning your food supply, it is just not possible. Your neighbor does not have access to a colorless, odorless poison. It is too difficult to get an effective colorless, odorless poison. And besides, your kitchen door is usually locked."
"I did not complete a single test to see whether or not your food supply contains a colorless, odorless poison, but I know that it does not because if it did, you would have died shortly after breakfast."
"So, please. Sit down and eat your lunch. Forget about your neighbor's intent to poison you, and think only of how difficult it would actually be for your neighbor to do it."
"By the way, what would you like for supper this evening?"

Your math is off, 500,000 tons is 500KT. .5KT is 500 tons or 1 million pounds. Combine the weight of the jet, the stored energy in the fuel and the speed of the aircraft and you can easily reach this energy level.

When a group as dedicated as Al Queda has a will to do something, and it is possible to do it, it is only a matter of time until the group succeeds. Dedication? If dedication were all that was needed, you'd be speaking German.
A. Q. Kahn's network is a pretty good source according to what I have read.
Remind me again why A. Q. Khan isn't in Guantanamo? I understand limited mobility, under "house arrest" in a mansion in Islamabad can be pretty burdensome, but why hasn't your government done anything about him?

5KT is 500 tons or 1 million pounds.No. 5 kilo tons is 5000 tons... of conventional high explosive, or TNT. Jet fuel is no where near as explosive as TNT.
Combine the weight of the jet, the stored energy in the fuel and the speed of the aircraft and you can easily reach this energy level.
No, you really really can't. Sorry.

I admit I did not read the article. However, I believe if "one" device exists it would have been used already. Terrorists are not going to hang around with a nuclear device that can be used and wait to be caught. Within minutes of them receiving a device, it will be used.
To: GingisK
China, why they wouldn't supply our enemies either. You really think China would give a nuclear weapon to Al Qaeda? You're high.

have been smuggled in through the border with Mexico.
But securing our border would keep all these wonderful workers out.

If nuclear devices are set off by Islamic extremists in this country Mecca will be reduced to a glob of radioactive glass in less than 12 hours ... guaranteed.I wish I believed this. Unfortunately, I don't think anyone in our government or military with the ability to make that kind of decision has the gumption to actually do it. If they did, vast sections of Afghanistan and Iraq would now be irradiated volcanic glass...

Nukes are not that high-maintenence.
- Please describe the tritium decay cycle.
- Please describe your source of tritium.
If you cannot do the above, or 3. don't understand why I'm asking, then you have no idea what you're talking about.

... vast sections of Afghanistan and Iraq would now be irradiated volcanic glass...My initial post states that in the event of a Islamic terrorist nuclear attack on U.S. territory we would retaliate by turning Mecca into a radioactive glob of glass. To this point in the war on terrorism there has been no need to retaliate to that extreme ...

So far so good my ass!
WTF are you talking about?
If I were to chop off your legs trying to kill you, would you still discount the threat I pose to your existence?
How can I be sure you are not an ostrich that has learned how to access the Internet?

That is what happens when an irresistible force meets an immovable object.
I don't speak German.
There is also an irresistible force that wants to kill you. How immovable is your will to stop them?

If you cannot do the above, or 3. don't understand why I'm asking, then you have no idea what you're talking about. Show me where tritium must be used in a fission bomb. Was tritium used, for example, in W54 tactical nuke? That weighed under 60 lbs. Or do you think bin Laden has too big an ego for mere sub-kiloton yields?

Interesting commentaries....if this guy had said 5 years ago that some terrorists were getting ready to fly passenger jets into the World Trade Center towers these posts no doubt would have reflected the same diatribe. Despite the obvious fact of Project Bojinka, MANY people have posted on FR that 9/11 was "unimaginable." Not only was it imagined, it was planned in detail and nearly executed in a different location, and our government knew all about it.
