Grass Roots Brush Off Rove Issue
Washington Times via RNC E-Mail ^ | July 14, 2005 | Donald Lambro

Republican state chairmen yesterday said their party's rank and file solidly support Karl Rove in the face of intensified Democratic criticism of the senior White House adviser that some called a political smear job to exploit an ongoing CIA leak investigation.

Republican officials across the country said that outside of a flurry of phone calls and e-mail from party activists rallying to Mr. Rove's defense, the attacks and counterattacks were an inside-the-Beltway story that had no political traction among voters at the grass-roots level.

"You can judge a controversy by reading the e-mails and the phone calls [from Republicans], and they are 100 percent in support of Karl Rove," said South Carolina Chairman Katon Dawson. "This looks like partisan personal attacks against Rove for purely political purposes." ...

Several chairmen interviewed yesterday said that voters in their states were focused on rising gas prices, state budgets and summer vacations.

"I don't get the sense that anybody is talking about Karl Rove up here," said New Hampshire Republican Party Chairman Warren Henderson. ...

In Minnesota ... party Chairman Ron Carey says the war of words over Mr. Rove's purported role in the leak "has had absolutely no traction here whatsoever." ...

In Pennsylvania, Republican Party Chairwoman Eileen Melvin said she has seen few stories about the CIA leak that has gripped Washington in the past week. "Everybody I've talked to, and we've had calls from a lot of our leaders, are more concerned about the economy, developing an energy policy and, quite frankly, who is going to be the Supreme Court nominee." ...

In my opinion there is a political party suffering from this but it isn't the Republicans.....

The more the Rats cry, the more irrelevant they become and the more confidence erodes in them to provide leadership for anything. So far as I'm concerned the Dems couldn't provide leadership in the passing of a bowel movement.

No kidding. Why would we care about the usually Washington 'he-said-she-said' BS?

Frankly, any poll that asks the American people: Should the President fire Karl Rove?", should have an option that says "Who's Karl Rove?"

That option would probably garner 20% or more of the vote.

In my opinion conservatives shouldn't waste any time defending Rove. He is the clown pushing for illegal alien amnesty, and open borders.

Actually, although I agree that this attack on Rove is a bogus issue, I don't support his open borders policies and I REALLY detest his continued support for Gerry Parsky and the New Majority in California.

So they'd be doing us a great favor if they forced Bush to dump Rove;

still, we don't want them to have that kind of victory - it would only make them bolder in opposing Bush's SCOTUS nominees.

THE BLUMENTHAL HYPOTHETICAL

"Imagine if an e-mail had surfaced showing that a top aide to Clinton--say, Sid Blumenthal--had told a reporter about a covert CIA agent." The always fair and balanced Howard Kurtz posed that hypothetical in a column yesterday, and it's a reasonable question. And as it happens, we know the answer.

As a matter of fact, a Clinton aide - not a top aide, but a political appointee - did release personal information about one of Clinton's accusers, highly embarrassing information at that: I am referring of course to former Assistant Secretary of Defense Kenneth Bacon's decision to release Linda Tripp's 3-decade old arrest record to New Yorker writer Jane Mayer.

Bacon's actions - unlike anything Karl Rove is said to have done - were clearly illegal. And what happened in that case? Basically a big pile of nothing. There was never much media interest in the matter, and when eventually Bacon was reprimanded and issued an apology of sorts, the matter dropped from sight. Tripp's reputation suffered irreparable permanent damage; Bacon went on to a distinguished post-governmental career as president of Refugees International

So there's our answer to Kurtz's hypothetical. Had this story involved a Clinton aide, the best guess is that what would have happened is: At least as far as the major media are concerned, he'd have gotten clean away with it.

I'd like to raise a practical question. If either Cooper or Miller said that Rove was the leak, how do they prove that it's true?

Well .. thank you for your single issue. Give me a break.

This is an attack against the truth - from the people on the left - who are supporting the lying Wilson.

Well .. this issue with Rove isn't about "open borders" - it's about the left's lies and support of a liar.

I cannot believe you think allowing the dems to "force Bush to demp Rove" is a good idea.

Sheeeeeesh! So dumping an innocent person is your standard ..??

"If either Cooper or Miller said that Rove was the leak, how do they prove that it's true?"

They can't prove it's true - because Rove's conversations are recorded - and there's a transcript of what Rove said to Cooper.

Also .. no one has ever said that Rove was Judith Miller's source. I don't believe he was .. because if he was Miller's source, she would have given him up in a heart beat. But because she's falling on the sword for the source .. it must be some high level democrat that the NYT doesn't want revealed.

The Rove thing will be an issue until the loony left-wingers and their water-carriers in the lamestream media find another issue to latch onto. Then it will quietly go away.

I heard an ad on WABC today that is blasting Rove and basically called him a KKK Nazi.

The ad was run by George Soros.
