Editorial: Karl Rove/Real issue is the case for war (Another StarTribune Barf Alert!)
Minneapolis Star/Tribune (aka The Red Star) ^ | 7/14/05 | Editorial Staff of the StarTribune

Did White House political adviser Karl Rove deliberately reveal the identity of an undercover CIA operative? Only two people can answer that question, and neither one is talking: Rove himself and special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald, who is investigating the question.

Sooner or later, we probably will get an answer. Fitzgerald has been so aggressive in this investigation -- to the point of jailing a New York Times reporter who refused to reveal her confidential sources -- that indictments are reasonably likely.

In the meantime, it's important to look beyond the immediate political spectacle in Washington -- White House spokesman Scott McClellan finally confronted by reporters who feel abused and lied to -- to the reason Rove was talking to a reporter about ex-diplomat Joseph Wilson at all.

The real issue, more serious and less glitzy than whether Bush will stand by his political adviser, is the extraordinary efforts the Bush administration made to protect a case for war in Iraq from all contradictory evidence -- in effect, as the British spymaster Sir Richard Dearlove put it, to "fix" the facts and intelligence so they would support a decision already made.

Well, the editorial board at the StarTribune strikes again with a classic case of the Big Lie Technique.

Not being able to clearly pin Valerie Plame's "outing" on Rove, they pursue the same old "This war was caused by faulty and cooked intelligence" angle they've been spouting for years now.

This is a long-winded editorial and it's non-sensical too...but since when has that stopped the Red Star?! Print it out and read it and you'll get a classic example of a newspaper sorely out of touch.

Opinions or snide comments...anyone?

She wasn't "outed" because she wasn't an "undercover operative" and hadn't been for years. The liberal media is absolutely brainless on this. A hateful bunch...

She wasn't/isn't an undercover CIA operative she's a paper pusher. She drives a desk.

I got an idea. Let's have a worst editorial contest. Hear's my submission from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

The CIA and Joe Wilson were the ones that were wrong on the yellow cake report, not the administration.

It is interesting to note that Tenet knew nothing of Wilson's trip or report. This appears to have been a completely in house operation of the CIA WMD specialists. Further, it was the CIA who requested the independent council investigation, and I am fairly certain that Tenet did know about this action, and may have requested it. Since Rove is not the target of the investigation, it appears that someone inside the CIA may be the target.

It appears that Rove, Novak and the administration can legally make the claim that no one "leaked" her name. The legal premise to the word "leak" of an undercover CIA agent applies only to one that has been stationed outside the US within the past 5 years. Plame, according to Wilson's book, was overseas until June '97 but even the mention of "Wilson's Wife" by Rove wasn't done until July '03, over 6 years later. One can not leak unless the premise is there for a leak and it's not in this case.

Never ceases to amaze me how these provincial newspapers respond like Pavlov's dogs to the signals sent by the New York Times/Washington Post. "Us, too. Us, too." They never have an original thought, let alone an insight, on matters of national import.

If Rove was the target of the grand jury his security clearance would automatically been suspended. Therefore he is not the target.
