TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Child welfare workers are investigating more than 1,100 reports of possible child abuse that went unnoticed for almost two months because of a technical problem. A spokeswoman for the agency says the problem was caused by a faulty fax machine.
The reports were sent to a DCF fax from around the state between May 13th and July 6th. Apparently one of four lines into the fax failed, and then the machine's electronic alert failed, so staffers didn't know it wasn't working properly.
Officials call it a "glitch." A DCF official says the agency had no indication that any of the children have been harmed by the delay.
"They came in and kind of went into a holding pattern and did not come all the way through to our fax printer. As a result we had reports that were not getting out to our hot line counselors to where they could distribute them to the field," explained Florida Abuse Hot Line Director Elizabeth Schlein.

I guess e-mail hasn't been invented yet.
It isn't all incompetence...although there is plenty of it.
There is also a lack of money, the caseworkers are totally overwhelmed. People get all upset about this stuff, but when it comes to putting their money where their mouth is, its another story. Most citizens are also about as concerned about this as they are about the rididculous governement school system.
We get what we pay for...financially and with our involvement.
From everything that has happened recently in FL, all the cases that have made the news, it is clear that FL DCF is a major joke. And it ain't really funny at all
DCF is criminally incompetent. My wife's Navy buddy (female) two kids have been beaten regularly by the father. Reports submitted by every professional involved, the cops, the pediatrician, school counselor. Kids sent to hospital multiple times.
DCF's response? "Don't bother us."
Tell them he read them the Bible before going to bed.
"Kids sent to hospital multiple times."
Ummm....dude...I just gotta say, the Navy would *never* put up with that.
