It is not a very good idea to cover the whole window. Once the power goes off, not if it goes off, ventilation will be necessary. Besides the creature comfort issues, there are theories of leaving windows cracked to reduce major pressure differential between the inside and outside. Light is another thing, although candles are fun for a while.
Good point, ST. We cut handholds in our plywood to make it easier to handle. It also gives us ventilation and views to the outdoors. The handholds are about 2" x 8".
Most of the literature dissuades open windows--although my next-door neighbor swears by it. Just make sure the open window is on the leeward side of the storm, and be prepared to change when the wind direction changes.
Candles are a no-no during the storm. Too many fires occur when the wind breeches the structure.
With the kevlar screens, when they come, we'll have air circulation and light. I like the idea of handholds in the plywood. May well do that next time.
The farmer who hauled out the diesel the prior owner left here (in 55 gal drums) wasn't going to use it straight, but mix it with fresh fuel. I don't keep enough around normally, to worry about. I get 15-20 gals just prior to a storm approaching and then use it exercising the generator each month.
If you gave him the fuel or paid him to haul it off you got ripped off.
Our winds picking up here a little. The palm trees blowing. Nice:')
Kevlar screens sounds heavy duty! I've never heard of them. I'll have to look into that. Do they replace your normal screens on your windows? Are they for full time use?
Not me. The prior owner gave it away. I just happened to be there when he was picking it up
I see we are still in the middle of the cone but is she dieing?
If you check the local radar you'll see there are thunderstorms heading our way. Last night's storms didn't make it this far south, but these look like they will. They are moving into Willacy and Hidalgo counties now. I think we might get wet soon.
hmmm, I'd say you were right about that low lifting out of here cause the sun is trying to come out but the B dropped to 29.7 hmmmm.
They're a new type of hurricane protection. They're roll up screens not window screens. They meet the Dade county standards for protection. We liked the idea to protect the triple slider and to screen off the area under the lanai roof overhang. Keeps the wind from getting under that roof, plus lets us be on the lanai during the storm if we want to be. The screening lets a small amount of the wind through, but stops the strong wind or any debris.

Nah, I don't think Em is dying. She's just taking a moment to regroup. She'll be moving into a more favorable growing area soon. And once she gets into the GOM she's gonna start perking. Western GOM is hot, hot, hot!
Ok, I see. I didn't put it in motion and thought it was headed to the gulf. We are supposed to leave for Houston in about an hour. We were coming back tomorrow night. HMM. I don't want to drive in rain all night.
No way, no how.

I stopped at the word "beer" in that sentence and laughed out loud! Ya know, people do have their priorites.
Thanks for the kevlar screen info. Sounds like a product I need to learn more about. We board homes up for those who can't when a hurricane threatens. This product might be a good recommendation for future use.
We first learned about the screens at the home shows around here early last year. They were brand new then. From what I've heard, the plant that makes them for my installer is here in FL and is running 24/7 trying to keep up
It looks like you will get past this storm north of CC. Be careful and have a safe trip.
Well, I'm out of here. My son said Walmarts already out of most stuff so I guess I'll pick up some more water and a few things in Robstown. I have a ferrier waiting for me to shoe my horses in the morning. Yall ping me so I can find the thread when I get back tomorrow night, ok?
Stupid Y2K nuts. Anyone with half a brain knew it was gonna be no big deal.
