Whatever happened to the Federal sentencing guidelines that Federal judges must follow?

The federal sentencing guidelines were struck down in yet another close decision in the Supreme Court which thumbed its nose at a duly-passed law from Congress. That law was written for the PRECISE PURPOSE of cutting down the wildly disparate sentencing decisions of federal judges.

Bottom line: the guidelines are now "suggestions" rather than "requirements." Think in terms of what the lib-Dems are trying to do with the Ten Commandments.
