INDIANAPOLIS -- President Bush's scheduled visit this week to Indiana Black Expo's Summer Celebration is a win-win opportunity for him and Black Expo, according to Expo officials and political observers.
For Black Expo, it brings presidential prestige and national media exposure that no amount of in-house publicity could buy.
Bush gains, too, by reaching a significant black audience the very week he is skipping the annual convention of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People in Milwaukee. ...
Bush will speak at Expo's Corporate Luncheon and Awards, where about 3,000 executives, managers and others are expected. Attendance at all Summer Celebration events will be about 300,000, according to Expo spokeswoman Alpha Garrett.
Bush's visit was announced last Friday by Gov. Mitch Daniels... "I am trying to speak to the need for Indiana to be unified across all lines," Daniels said, "and I know the president shares those thoughts."
Daniels' press secretary, Jane Jankowski, said Daniels broached the topic with presidential adviser Karl Rove last winter. ...
Washington said Bush will draw a spotlight to Expo's educational, health and economic initiatives, which are sometimes overshadowed by the organization's entertainment and social events.
Marvin Scott, who ran last year as Indiana's Republican candidate for U.S. Senate, also sees presidential gains from his Black Expo appearance. "This will give him a chance to speak to a (business) group that will hopefully understand many of the concepts of his administration ... that would further advance the interests of minorities in Indiana and the United States," he said. ...
But Scott, who is black, said many African Americans vote reflexively against Republicans, even when they agree with them on such issues as abortion, same-sex marriage and school choice.
"Blacks are fundamentally conservative, when you look at the issues," he said. ...

I don't know how many freepers saw his speech at the Urban League last year, but IMHO, it was one of his best speeches ever!!!
I hope he does as well for this one.
I'm curious about what he's going to say at the White Expo. W
NAACP convention vs. Black Expo: Losers vs. winners.
Where is the "White Expo"???? Oh, nevermind, that would be RACIST.
What utter bull$hit.
The Indy Star this morning had the usual Letters to the Editor from Democrats, trashing Bush and his visit. They must get paid to write this stuff.
Good strategery to bypass the old black leaders who are Democrat party operatives.
Absolutely a good strategy. Black conservatives have been ignored for years while black democrats have gotten all of the attention. It is time for a change. Bush has done better than any other to put them into the limelight. Folks better recognize that Bush knows what he is doing (though he falls flat with illegal immigration).
There's a clip in the article which speaks directly to that. Apparently the NAACP is holding their "event" in Milwaukee at the same time as the Black Expo.
Nah. They probably really believe President Bush is responsible for broken toasters, and flat tires, too.
Where is the "White Expo"???? Oh, nevermind, that would be RACIST.I keep checking the White Entertainment Channel for news on it ....
Give the way liberal Democrat blacks talk -- even an all black conservative expo would be considered a "white expo".
Sure seems like it! One group is positive for growth in America; the other group is constantly wrangling with "anger issues" never realizing how badly in need they are of "anger management" counseling. It'd help this latter group tremendously, IMHO: economically, socially, culturally.
See post #13.
I bet he does! :) He's going to an event where people will probably be respectful even if they disagree with some of his policies. And if they disagree, no doubts, they'll at least be civil and polite -- in recognition that we are all part of this civilization. Sensible people can disagree and yet be close, and neighborly.
I would be willing to bet that after he finishes talking, 90% of the people in attendence will AGREE with what he says. A lot of their disagreement hinges on what they have been told the policies are, in this case they will hear it directly from the source.
The NAACP quit mattering a long time ago.
That appears to be true here in the US. But for a very long time, the NAACP has been predominantly concerned with "building bridges" with and to other countries -- do some digging, and you'll learn that many in the "hate America" movement have been overbusy for overlong representing themselves as "American Spokesmen" while doing everything possible to harm America economically, security-wise, and socially. Sort of an "insider trading" deal... under a chimera of something else. It's why Julian Bond, et al, have no shame or concern about their bilious comments in the MSM and public eye: They speak to those outside the US.
NAACP has registration of only about 5000 for their event in Milwaukee. Seems the expo in Indiania has more attendees.
