Michelle Malkin: Curse of the language corrupters
Townhall.com ^ | 13 July 2005 | Michelle Malkin

Across the pond, the British Broadcasting Corporation is taking well-deserved lumps for whitewashing the 7/7 terrorist attacks in London. Editors have reportedly expunged the word "terrorist" from the BBC website and substituted the sanitized "bomber" to describe the killers.

Next: "Burglars" will be "takers." "Child molesters" will be "ticklers." "Rapists" will be "unplanned lovers."

High-minded BBC guidelines admonish employees against using words like "terrorist" that "carry emotional or value judgments." Yet, employing a reporter, Barbara Plett, who told viewers she bawled her eyes out when an ailing Yasser Arafat was whisked off to France in November 2004, is model objectivity.

But bashing the terror-coddling BBC is too easy. Let us turn to our own language corrupters

I don't think "bomber" is quite the euphamism that Michelle thinks it is. She missed this one by a mile.

In London, "terrorists" are "bombers." In the U.S., citizen watchdogs are "vigilantes." The Ministry of Truth would be pleased.

Indeed they would, Michelle.

I suspect the West will have to endure a helluva lot more Islamic terrorism before it takes the gloves off and flushes the PC bullsh/t down the camode.

Why is it that so few voices see things clearly today, and they are seldom holders of public office?

It is an embarassment to our nation that these truths must be spoken by an ordinary citizen rather than a President, a Congressman or a Senator.

Thank you Michelle. It's a lonely job, saying what needs to be said.

A lot of people have never read "1984".

1984 and Animal Farm were part of my required reading down here in the red state south, worst of all at a Catholic Private School! Our reading list looked more like a university one!

All animals are equal, some are more equal than others!

I had to read Animal Farm as well. It's basically a simplified version of 1984. I think of it a lot when it comes to the PC police anyway, though.

A lot of people have never read "1984".

And twice at FR I have seen people comment that even though the book was written twenty years ago it is still relevant today.

No, I didn't correct them.
