SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The district attorney filed charges Tuesday against three people who allegedly assaulted a police officer during an anarchists' protest last week.

Officer Peter Shields, 36, was struck with an unknown object as he confronted protesters late Friday in the city's Mission district. He was hospitalized with brain swelling and a blood clot before being released Sunday night.

"The events ... went far beyond the Constitutional rights of protesters and instead crossed the borders into activity that evidenced a wanton disregard for the safety of San Francisco police officers and residents of this city," District Attorney Kamala Harris said in a statement. "The attack upon Officer Peter Shields was cowardly and atrocious and should not be tolerated."

Doritt Ernst, 26, of Berkeley was charged with a felony for taking a weapon other than a firearm from a police officer, and two misdemeanors for rioting and resisting arrest.

Gabriel Meyers, 28, was charged with a felony for attempted lynching and two misdemeanors for resisting arrest and rioting.

Cody Tarlow, 21, of Felton, was charged with three misdemeanors for rioting, resisting arrest and wearing a mask.

The defendants were scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday.

The demonstration was organized in part by Anarchist Action. An anarchist Web site called for protests in San Francisco and elsewhere to protest the G-8 summit in Scotland.

Shields is expected to recover and will likely rejoin the force when his injuries heal.

This from a newly elected DA who last year refused to press for the death penalty after a police officer was mowed down by a teen with an AK47 out for a kill.

These 3 folks will probably walk before all is said and done..

According to the local San Fran TV news station, they're still looking for the guy who actually assualted the officer. That guy should be looking at attempted murder.
