Senators Advise Bush on Picking a Supreme Court Nominee
NYT ^ | 7/13/05 | CARL HULSE and RICHARD W. STEVENSON

In their first meeting with President Bush over the Supreme Court vacancy, Democrats went so far Tuesday as to offer names for consideration while senators of both parties encouraged the president to look beyond the federal judiciary for candidates.

"It would be good to have some diversity," said Senator Specter, ...who said a nominee from outside the federal courts could bring new points of view and broader experience to the court than someone promoted from the federal bench.

The breakfast meeting marked a new phase in the politically charged effort to fill the first Supreme Court vacancy in more than a decade, allowing direct talks between the president and the lawmakers over moving forward with the nomination...

Besides Mr. Specter, the president met with Senator Bill Frist, the majority leader; Senator Harry Reid, the Democratic leader; and Senator Patrick J. Leahy of Vermont, the senior Democrat on the judiciary panel. Vice President Dick Cheney and Andrew H. Card Jr., the White House chief of staff, also attended.

Despite calls by Democrats for Mr. Bush to identify some of the people on his short list, lawmakers and other officials said he did not reveal any of his favorites and spent much of the private White House session listening to the views of the senators on a replacement for Justice Sandra Day O'Connor...

"I would really like for him to name another woman," Mrs. Bush, who was in South Africa, said in an interview on NBC's "Today" show. She added that she was certain her husband would "pick somebody who's really, really terrific."

Democrats were said by two officials familiar with what took place to have broached the names of at least three judges of Hispanic background who they believed had a strong chance of being approved without a tumultuous confirmation fight:...

I've been thinking and saying the same thing for many years.

Who says lawyers make the best judges and polititians?

Our best President was an actor.

Intelligence and a clear focus is a must.

David Horowitz is a good choice.

It's none of their business who Bush chooses. It doesn't matter who "they" want. The Constitution gives Bush the right to choose anyone he wants.
Wait it out and let them make fools out of themselves if we have to. The vacancies will pile up, and it'll be the democrats fault for getting in the way of the Constitution.

Hand them their rope, Bush. Do NOT screw up this lifetime opportunity to save this country!!

Don't think he'll mess up. He made a promise & he'll keep it...or lose lots of conservative $$$$ for the Republican party for a very long time.

There's a simple message I think we need to drill into the heads of every Republican we voted into office to represent us:

If we'd wanted justices on the Supreme Court that are acceptable to Democrats, we wouldn't have voted for Republicans!

The Republicans are in power for a purpose. If they betray that purpose, they won't stay in power long (nor should they).

Janice Rogers Brown??

Definitely. Every one (but the white liberal elitists on the left) would love her!!! She's a perfect choice.

Yes. No doubt, and the democrats know it, too. We'll probably end up nuking them. I don't think they'll give us any other choice.
This is death for the democrat party. Without activist judges, they can't dictate their will on the people any more.

Judge Brown is my choice. Let the liberals show the minorities how much they "feel" for them.

Deep down, I think Bush is going to pick a moderate just to get him through the Senate. The Democrats will still tar and feather him and what we will get is a RINO with a chip on his shoulder. In the long run, conservatives will get less from this appointment than the Democrats will.

Several officials familiar with the discussion said Judge Sonia Sotomayor of the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals and Judge Ed Prado of the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals, both of whom are Hispanic, were among the names mentioned as Bush met with key lawmakers from both parties to discuss the first high court vacancy in 11 years.

The extremist left-wing and their masters at the New York Times will try to turn it into a "race card" issue if Bush nominates Brown.

Nothing terrorizes the left more than conservative minorities.

That has to be repeated.

NOTHING TERRORIZES THE DEOMOCRAT PARTY MORE THAN CONSERVATIVE MINORITIES!!

Judge Brown was elected to serve in racially diverse CA. If her opinions were so extreme, why did she receive more than 75% of the vote? How does the race card work let alone her decisions?

How about HILLARY!!

I was hoping you would ask!

Madame Hillary has the most experience only in running a brothel of male whores numbering just one.

She has been doing a great job in this vocation for most of her adult life.

Five years ago she took a vacation so she could screw around for herself.

Pity the people of New York state.

Schumer and the Madame..........arrrghhh!!

Judge Sonia Sotomayor of the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals --
Clinton appointee!!! NO WAY!!!!!

Judge Ed Prado of the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals -- Judge Prado was appointed to the federal bench by President Reagan in 1984. Prior to that he had been both a prosecutor and a public defender and a state court judge.
President Bush has nominated Edward C. Prado, a U.S. District Court Judge in the Western District of Texas, for a seat on the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals.
