Paris city hall will not honour Scientologist Cruise

Tue Jul 12, 7:42 AM ET

The Paris city hall has pledged not to make US actor Tom Cruise an honorary citizen because of his membership of the Church of Scientology.

In a debate late Monday, the Socialist-controlled municipal assembly approved a resolution "never to welcome the actor Tom Cruise, spokesman for Scientology and self-declared militant for this organisation."

Last month on a promotional tour for his film "War of the Worlds," the 43-year-old star chose the Eiffel Tower to propose to girlfriend Katie Holmes. He was also made an honorary citizen of the southern French city of Marseille.

Like many other European governments, the French authorities view Scientology -- founded in the United States in 1954 by science-fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard -- as a dangerous cult.

Cruise was described as a "sect-symbol" by a Socialist deputy.

Since Cruise "exploited" Paris for his PR by doing this stunt, they slapped him with the resolution od "non-welcome." Still it looks petty.

French left are just as much nutcases as Cruise. However, they apparently fail to notice.

Say, the French are on quite a roll. First they vote down the EU, then they diss the unofficial Church of Satan. Not bad.

LOL. Now if only the French would recognize the dangers in their Islamofascist immigrant problem... but I guess it's a start. And the French are right, the way Cruise handled the proposal, it was like one big Tom promo. Note - not a TomKat promo or WOTF promo, just him, as always.

Like many other European governments, the French authorities view Scientology -- founded in the United States in 1954 by science-fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard -- as a dangerous cult.

This must be one of those prime examples of what Hitler meant by repeating a lie often enough. Scientology was not a religion invented by Hubbard in 1954. Dianetics was a poorly written science fiction book written by Hubbard in the 50's (54?) that morphed into self-help in the 70's and that he turned in to a 'religion' shortly after, on a bet really that he could start a religion and quickly grow rich separating sheeple from their money. He cruised (pun intended) the talk show circuits in the 70's hoping to lure show-biz people in and the proof is in the pudding. In the mid-90's he and his cult fought like hell to keep the 'secrets' of their 'religion' from being freely posted on the internet. They lost, and now we know how the upper level members believe in aliens, and what their thoughts are on psychiatry and illness in general. Some of this had been kept secret from 'lower level' members until they had been sufficiently hooked in. So many articles as of late refer to it as a religion founded by Hubbard in the 50's, lending it a false credibility, very misleading, possibly intentional by some.

Scientology is dangerous only in that it offends Pychiatrists who peddle chemical imbalances everywhere they go. Cruise is right even if Scientology is wrong as a "religion". People need to deal with and learn to cope with the real underlying problems in their lives. Depression is a normal response to problems in ones life, you lose your job, get a disease, wreck your car, have a conflict with your wife, lose a child and is there any wonder you feel depressed? What most folks need is someone to talk to them and get them out and about. Its been my experience that most people who are cronically depressed need a friend and a purpose not a pill. A brain is a complex self affecting organ and though it is tempting to write off real deficiencies in your life, your parenting, your spouse, your workplace to the catch all "chemical imbalance" one should think twice before shackling themselves with a chemical dependancy that locks them into a holding pattern of mediocrity. We feel bad for a reason and usually it means we are screwing up or need to change our behavior, change our thoughts, or our path in life. I imagine Jesus would've been labeled as having a chemical imbalance because his brain and thoughts didn't fit the "norm" which brings us to the big question is what is the methodology used to determine what is a "normal" chemical balance? I suppose people who don't fit the average height are experiencing a height imbalance? What is more suspicious is the vast numbers of people that are postulated to have chemical imbalances and not even know it. It certainly makes one wonder how humanity got along without Prozac and all the other wonder drugs. How ever did they control their children and their depressions?

They locked them away in attics, prisons or asylums.

Let me tell you... I sure there had been drugs for my mother who was depressed and violent. Made for a miserable life for me. My aunt was also treated (barbarically) with electric shock treatments and both my sisters have been institutionalized for depression.

Anti-depressants saved my life!

Maybe they could have tried the "resolution of non-welcome" 65 years ago.

Psychotropic medications are not perfect, nor are they a cure-all, but for those who are in need, they represent a big step forward from the barbarism of years past.

A person with a truly broken mind (from whatever cause) can no more "cure" him/herself with the help of a friend who gets him/her out and about than a person with a fractured femur can "walk it off."

Tom Cruise is really, really ignorant on this subject.

Picky, Picky. Hubbard incorporated the Church of American Science, the Church of Scientology, and the Church of Spiritual Engineering in December 1953

But they totally ignore a cult founded in 622 AD that really is dangerous.

From "sex-symbol" to "sect-symbol". How far we've fallen.

If there is a dangerous cult they need to be worried about, it is Islam.

Anybody know whether Matt and Trey are planning "Team America II"? Because Tom sure seems to be hand-feeding them material for it.
