Apple today released Mac OS X 10.4.2, which the company says delivers overall improved reliability and compatibility for Mac OS X v10.4 and is recommended for all users. It includes fixes for file sharing, authentication, autologin, AirPort/wireless access, several graphics updates, .Mac fixes, Apple's core applications, and more. The company also included security fixes for a TCP/IP denial of service attack and Dashboard, which may install widgets that override Apple-supplied widgets. It is available via the Software Update for Mac OS X Tiger users. Both a Delta update for Mac OS X 10.4.1 users and a Combo Update for Mac OS X 10.4 users is available on the Web as well.
Specifically, the update delivers:
file sharing using AFP and SMB/CIFS network file services
single sign-on authentication and reliable access to Active Directory servers
autologin for managed user accounts
AirPort and wireless access
Core Graphics, Core Audio, Core Image, including updated ATI and NVIDIA graphics drivers
Finder updates including finding on Kind and using Slideshow
synchronizing your iDisk with .Mac
installation reliability
managing Dashboard widgets
Address Book, Automator, iCal, iChat, Mail, Safari, and Stickies applications
compatibility with third party applications and devices
A full list of fixes is available on Apple's website.

OS X 10.4.2 Update
While a widget can be installed in the Widgets Library by itself, it is not automatically installed nor will it "run itself". On a Mac, that requires the intervention of the user.
Err, Tiger. I am still new to this Apple stuff.
Any idea if this will fix the DVD player problem? Mine hasn't worked since I went to Tiger. They released some sort of fix last week, but it didn't help.
Well, I just went ahead and re-read it all... man, for a geeky guy, I sure don't read right. Apparently, it does not execute itself. You are correct, I am incorrect... dang! I hate having to say that.
No sweat. We're used to it from non-Mac people.
Well, hey, I really like the new Mac. I don't like the price which is why I am big on linux (I'm the VP of local LUG on campus). But, when it came time to upgrade my grandmother's computer, I got her one of those new mac-minis knowing it'll do anything she wants it to do, and still be a bazillion times more secure than MS, so I'll do less tech work over there.
Why is this worthy of a post?
OMG! A kindred soul! I agree with you. For the money, you can't beat a Wintel box...provided you're an IT professional. But anyone who recommends other than mac for the proverbial "little old ladies" should be strung up and horse whipped.
Because people are interested in it.
It'd be a little hard to find if it was just tacked onto a "London Bombers" thread, now wouldn't it?
Sorry, you are wrong. First of all Jaguar does not have a Dashboard or widgets. The issue reported in the May 9, 2005 issue of MacWorld Online was reported two days after Apple released the fix for the issue. That issue was completely patched in the release of OSX.4.1 and STILL required a user to invoke the widget before any malicious acts could take place. Merely downloading a widget into the Widgets Library does not activate it. Also attempting to download a widget with the same name as an existing widget would bring up a requestor asking permission to replace the existing with the new. THEN it first must be selected by the user and dragged to the Dashboard... at which point it is announced that the user is running an app for the first time and eliciting permission to do so BEFORE the widget is activated.
OK correction noted. I am not new to Apple stuff...
