Wake Forest?

You're probably thinking of NCCU - North Carolina Central University. There are also a number of other colleges and universities in the area but that one would be the largest outside of Duke, NCSU, and UNC.

Wake Forest is in Winston-Salem, an hour and a half away; East Carolina (ECU) is in Greenville, a couple of hours in the other direction.

Looks like the current fellow went to the Raleigh campus, which is the state capitol.
