Argentina:
On 2 August 2005, authorities arrested a Lebanese national -- who also has Venezuelan citizenship -- in Mar del Plata on suspicion that he might be a member of a terrorist organization.

At the time of the arrest, the suspect was inside of a rented apartment located approximately 250 yd/230 m from the Hermitage Hotel, the site of the Summit of the Americas, which is scheduled to take place in early November.

Police officers seized 40 cell phones that were connected through de-codifying equipment and a satellite dish, as well as a computer, with which authorities believe the suspect "cloned" other cell phone lines.

Authorities also stated that the suspect had made several phone calls to multiple countries in the Middle East. An investigation regarding the incident is underway.

Sounds like they're making plans for after August 6, so they are not expecting the Western world to fall apart. Either that or they are making backup plans in case the worst does not happen.

Mauritania:
A coup was reported in Mauritania on 3 August 2005. Soldiers blocked off roads in the capital, Nouakchott, as well as roads to the palace of President Maaouiya Ould Sid Ahmed Taya, who was in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, for the funeral of King Fahd and has reportedly landed in Niamey, Niger.

Soldiers also raided the offices of Mauritania's state radio and television station, seizing control and cutting off all state media broadcasts. Troops equipped with heavy weaponry and anti-aircraft guns are reportedly patrolling the streets of the city. Although witnesses have reported hearing gunfire, there are no reports of major violence in the streets. Currently, Nouakchott Airport (GQNN/NKC) and government offices are closed. This is an emerging situation.

The U.S. Embassy in Nouakchott issued a Warden Message on 3 August 2005 stating the current security situation in Mauritania. Among other information, the embassy "reduced its staff to emergency personnel and has instructed all other personnel to remain at home. The Embassy advises all American citizens to take immediate precautions to assure their safety, including remaining at home."
