FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SAFEHOUSE DESTROYED; 10 SUSPECTS DETAINED
BAGHDAD, Iraq Coalition forces conducted a raid in western Ramadi early Aug. 3 resulting in the capture of 10 suspected terrorists.
Upon arrival at the intended target, a local Iraqi citizen confirmed the building was being used as a terrorist safehouse.
When forces approached the building several suspected terrorists fled throughout the surrounding area. Six suspected terrorists were immediately detained and four were captured after they hid inside a nearby Mosque.
Iraqi citizens assisted the Coalition forces by pointing out the hiding place of the four suspects.
Prior to the raid, a male who lived in the safehouse came outside and told Coalition forces that terrorists were storing explosives inside where his two small children remained.
Coalition forces immediately rescued the children and escorted them away from the building. The children were safely reunited to their family.
The building was then destroyed by attack helicopters. Secondary explosions were seen. Additionally, improvised explosive device materials and weapons were found in the safehouse during the post-strike search.
The 10 suspected terrorists are currently detained for further questioning.

Imported Hamster type pets, with disease..... ate: Thu 4 Aug 2005 From: ProMED-mail Source: Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Reports, Thu 5 Aug 2005, 54(30);747-749 [edited] _____________________________________________________________ Interim Guidance for Minimizing Risk for Human Lymphocytic Choriomeningitis Virus Infection Associated with Rodents ----------------------------------------------- In May 2005, CDC received reports of 4 organ-transplant recipients with unknown illness. All were discovered to have been infected with lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV) via a common organ donor (1). Epidemiologic investigation traced the source of the virus to a pet hamster purchased by the donor from a local pet store. LCMV testing of other rodents at the pet store revealed 3 other LCMV-infected rodents (2 hamsters and a guinea pig), supplied by a single distributor (distributor A). _____________________________________________________________ Preliminary laboratory testing of hamsters from distributor A has identified an infection rate of approximately 3 percent among the animals sampled. The facility of distributor A is under quarantine until it can be documented as free of LCMV infection. This report provides background information on LCMV and interim guidance for the public on reducing risk for LCMV infection from pet rodents. _____________________________________________________________ Background Information ----------------------- LCMV is a rodent-borne arenavirus endemic in house mouse (_Mus musculus_) populations worldwide (3, 4, 5). Pet rodents (e.g., hamsters and guinea pigs) can become infected with LCMV after contact with wild rodents at a breeding facility, pet store, or home. The prevalence of LCMV in pet rodents is not known. Although other animals could possibly become infected with the virus, documented infections in humans have occurred only after exposure to infected mice, guinea pigs, and hamsters (6,7). _____________________________________________________________ LCMV infection in humans with normal immune systems usually causes either asymptomatic or mild, self-limited illness, characterized by any or all of the following symptoms: fever, malaise, lack of appetite, muscle aches, headache, nausea, and vomiting. Aseptic meningitis also can occur in some patients, but the infection is rarely fatal (6). _____________________________________________________________ LCMV infection during the 1st or 2nd trimester of pregnancy can cause severe illness or developmental defects in the fetus, including hydrocephalus, psychomotor retardation, and blindness (8); the proportion of developmental defects caused by LCMV is not known. Serologic studies of previous infection in humans in urban areas of the United States have demonstrated a prevalence of previous LCMV in those populations of approximately 5 percent (3). _____________________________________________________________ Person-to-person transmission has not been associated with LCMV, except for transmission from mother to fetus or through organ transplantation (1). Human infection occurs most commonly through exposure (by direct contact or aerosol) to secretions or excretions of infected animals (9). _____________________________________________________________ LCMV infection is a well-known occupational risk for laboratory workers who work with LCMV-infected laboratory rodents (9). _____________________________________________________________ An outbreak associated with pet hamsters sold by a single distributor was reported in 1974, when 181 symptomatic cases in persons with hamster contact were identified in 12 states; no deaths occurred (10). The outbreak was brought under control by voluntary cessation of sale and destruction of the infected breeding stock. _____________________________________________________________ Control of Wild Rodents ----------------------- Environmental modifications and hygiene practices that deter rodents from colonizing the home and work environment are the best means of reducing risk for exposure to infectious rodents. In addition, if rodents are found in work or living areas, safe practices for cleaning rodent waste and nesting materials are recommended. Preventing wild rodent entry also reduces opportunity for infection of pet rodents. _____________________________________________________________ General Recommendations for Preventing LCMV Infection from Pet Rodents ----------------------- Hamsters and other rodents are common pets, and the number of documented human LCMV infections from pet hamsters and other rodents is low. Basic precautions can reduce the risk for acquiring LCMV and other infections from pet rodents. Because rodents might not always exhibit signs of ill health resulting from LCMV infection, CDC recommends taking appropriate precautions with any rodent: (1) The public should be apprised of the risk for LCMV infection from rodents purchased from any pet store. (2) Destruction or return of recently purchased pet rodents is not recommended. (3) The probability of any one animal harboring LCMV infection is low. All pets are potential carriers of infectious diseases and should always be handled by using appropriate precautions. (4) Pet rodents must not be released into the wild to prevent introduction of nonnative species to North America. (5) Persons with specific concerns regarding the health of their pets should seek guidance from a veterinarian. _____________________________________________________________ Anyone handling or keeping pet rodents should take the following precautions to reduce the risk for LCMV infection: (1) Wash hands with soap and water (or alcohol-based hand sanitizers when soap is unavailable and hands are not visibly soiled) after handling pet rodents or cleaning up pet droppings, cages, or areas where pets have been. (2) Keep rodent cages clean and free of soiled bedding. (3) Clean cages outdoors or in a well-ventilated area. (4) Closely supervise young children when cleaning cages or handling rodents and supervise or assist children in washing their hands immediately after handling rodents and rodent cages or bedding. Never kiss or hold pet rodents close to the face. (6) Never allow pet rodents to come into contact with wild rodents or their droppings or nests. Cover pet rodent cages and food supplies and always supervise pet rodents when they are not in their cages. _____________________________________________________________ Precautions for Pregnant Women ----------------------- Although the risk for LCMV infection from pet rodents is low, pregnant women or women who think they might become pregnant should be aware of the risks associated with LCMV infection during pregnancy. The following precautions can be taken to reduce the risk for acquiring LCMV infection during pregnancy: (1) Avoid contact with wild rodents. Pregnant women who reside in a household with a wild rodent infestation should have the infestation addressed promptly by a professional pest control company or another member of the household. (2) Keep pet rodents in a separate part of the home. Pregnant women should ask another family member or friend to clean the cage and care for the pet or arrange for temporary adoption of the pet by a responsible person. Pregnant women should avoid prolonged stays in any room where a rodent resides. _____________________________________________________________ Precautions for Persons with Weakened Immune Systems ----------------------- For the organ recipients described in this report, transplantation of LCMV-infected organs into persons with medically induced immunosuppression likely increased disease severity. Persons with impaired immune-system function should avoid contact with all rodents. _____________________________________________________________ Testing for LCMV in Pet Rodents ----------------------- CDC does not recommend testing pet rodents. Serologic testing on rodents can be inaccurate and misleading. All pet animals should be assumed capable of transmitting certain infectious diseases. _____________________________________________________________ Testing for LCMV in Humans ----------------------- Testing for LCMV infection in asymptomatic persons is not necessary. Similarly, testing persons with previous history of LCMV-compatible illness generally is not useful. Persons with active disease suggestive of LCMV should seek medical care and report any exposures to wild or pet rodents. A physician should determine whether testing for LCMV is indicated. Physicians should work closely with their respective state health departments to discuss forwarding of samples to state laboratories or CDC for testing. _____________________________________________________________ (Reported by: Division of Viral and Rickettsial Diseases, National Center for Infectious Diseases; EIS officer, CDC.) _____________________________________________________________ References ---------- (1) CDC. Chechen Muslim Mufti declares Jihad on Terrorism
sciencedaily.com ^ | Aug. 4 | UPI
Posted on 08/04/2005 10:11:39 PM PDT by F14 Pilot
GROZNY, Russia, Aug. 4 (UPI) -- Chechnya's top Muslim cleric declared war on terrorism Thursday.
Sultan Mirzayev, the mufti of Chechnya, said the Wahabi branch of Islam is a "plague," Interfax news agency reported. Wahabi Islam is an extremely conservative version of the faith centered in Saudi Arabia.
"Those who kill innocent people should either be stopped, or arrested, or destroyed," Mirzayev said. "This should be done by all means."
The mufti told reporters the declaration of jihad was drawn up at a meeting between Muslim leaders and law enforcement officials.
Chechen Vice Prime Minister Ramzan Kadyrov said the decision is important because law enforcement officers must know action against terrorists does not violate Islam and the teachings of the Koran.

(This is almost impossible to believe in 2005..granny) Date: 4 Aug 2005 From: Mary Marshall Source: Reuters AlertNet [edited] _____________________________________________________________ Yemen: Polio cases increase, follow-up vaccinations planned ----------------------------------------------- The Ministry of Health in Yemen has announced the completion in July [2005] of 2 rounds of a nationwide campaign to immunize children following a polio outbreak in May [2005], and, reported a high level of success in reaching vulnerable children. _____________________________________________________________ Yemen now has 369 confirmed polio cases, but the rate is slowing, according to World Health Organization (WHO) figures. As of early July [2005], there were 300 cases. _____________________________________________________________ Polio is a highly infectious disease which invades the nervous system and can cause paralysis in a matter of hours. The outbreak in Yemen was initially confirmed in mid-May [2005] after a routine national immunization program in April [2005]. _____________________________________________________________ The Ministry of Health said this week [1st week August 2005] it was able to determine that the 2 rounds of vaccinations in July [2005] had reached at least 97 percent of the target population of 5 million children under the age of 5. _____________________________________________________________ The ministry, along with the WHO, United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), US Agency for Development (USAID), US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and other participating organizations, expect to conduct 3 more rounds of vaccinations between now and the end of the year [2005]. _____________________________________________________________ Yemen is one of 17 countries previously determined to have been polio-free but which have been struck by recent outbreaks. Of those countries, Yemen has the highest number of confirmed cases. _____________________________________________________________ The current outbreak is believed to have spread from Nigeria across Africa to Yemen, after some local officials in Nigeria had refused to facilitate vaccinations for months, claiming that they were part of a plot by western countries to make Muslim children infertile. _____________________________________________________________ During the 2nd round of vaccinations in Yemen in July [2005], there were also reports of refusals to cooperate by both doctors and clerics, but, according to UNICEF and Ministry of Health officials, they had only a minor impact on the overall success of the campaign. _____________________________________________________________ Most of the reports of refusals were based on the fact that there were cases of polio confirmed following the 1st round of vaccinations in April [2005], according to experts conducting the emergency campaign. This outbreak, despite vaccination having taken place, caused suspicion among some Yemenis. _____________________________________________________________ "It was the families that 1st made the link between the vaccinations and the disease," Dr. Kamel Ben Abdallah, health and nutrition officer with UNICEF in Yemen, said. _____________________________________________________________ The fact that it was the campaign that identified the presence of the disease -- not that caused it -- was not understood by some people in the community. _____________________________________________________________ Dr. Ali Al-Mudhwahi, director of family health at the Ministry of Health, who had sent his own doctors and religious leaders around the country to convince skeptics during the last round, told IRIN that things had changed this time around. _____________________________________________________________ "It was the active participation of communities that convinced those who were refusing," he said. _____________________________________________________________ The door-to-door aspect of the last campaign had built up the trust of families, he said, and this campaign had seen far fewer reports of refusal to cooperate. _____________________________________________________________ Al-Mudhwahi did, though, report difficulties in the northwestern governorate of Al-Jawf, a region where the tribal and local leaders have historically distrusted the central government. _____________________________________________________________ During the previous round of vaccinations, the ministry enlisted the help of the USAID-sponsored Adventist Development Relief Agency (ADRA), an international NGO that had built up the trust of tribal leaders in the past 3 years through its work in the region. _____________________________________________________________ According to Al-Mudhwahi, ADRA had stopped working in the region in recent weeks, after threats from local groups following the country's recent unrest over the dramatic rise in fuel prices. _____________________________________________________________ Ministry of Health vehicles were then attacked while transporting supplies for the vaccination program in the region. The campaign was brought to a halt after completing the vaccination in just 6 of the governorate's 12 provinces. _____________________________________________________________ Al-Mudhwahi said that government troops had been sent in to secure the area but that the ministry is now negotiating with the governor and local tribes for guarantees and protection in order to complete the vaccinations in the remaining provinces. _____________________________________________________________ Al-Jawf is currently reported to have one confirmed case of polio. -- ProMED-mail [According to the Polio Eradication website , as of the week ending 26 Jul 2005, there were a total of 345 cases of polio reported from Yemen this year. The above mentioned 369 cases represent an increase of 24 cases in the past week (final week July 2005) and 45 cases since our last update one month ago (Poliomyelitis - Yemen (06) 20050704.1891), when there were 300 cases reported. _____________________________________________________________ Checking the detailed reports , as of 28 Jul 2005, there have been a total of 717 cases of acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) reported in Yemen this year, of which 345 to date have been confirmed as due to infection with poliovirus. From another report as yet not available on the Internet, the date of onset of the most recent confirmed case of polio was 24 Jun 2005, suggesting that this increase in cases confirmed may be due to time lags associated with laboratory confirmation, or may represent delayed identification of cases, but suggests that the 2 rounds of vaccination activities in the country may have interrupted transmission of the wild poliovirus. - Mod.MPP]

While conventional weapons such as explosive devices are a more immediate threat in many areas, use of non-conventional weapons, including chemical or biological agents must be considered a possible threat. It's about time the State Department "got real."

(almost instant death....granny) [1] Date: Thu 4 Aug 2005 From: Cat Bachman Source: XinHuaNet.com [edited] _____________________________________________________________ Multi-organ failure increases mortality of pig-borne disease ----------------------------------------------- Short latent period and multi-organ failure are ultimate causes for the higher-than-expected mortality rate of the pig-borne disease in southwest China's Sichuan Province, a health specialist has said. _____________________________________________________________ "Most patients suffered failures in the kidneys, livers, lungs and heart shortly after they were contracted, and some of them died before timely treatment," said Chen Zhihai, head of the expert panel sent by the Ministry of Health to the epidemic-hit regions. _____________________________________________________________ The latent period of the disease is so short that some patients died within 10 hours after infection, he said in an interview with Xinhua on Thu 4 Aug 2005. "In one case, a man died 2 hours after slaughtering a sick pig." In comparison, it normally takes a week or 2 for an ordinary bacterial infection to break out, he said. _____________________________________________________________ "On the other hand, the disease was caused by _Streptococcus suis_ type 2, the deadliest of all the 35 forms of pig-borne _S. suis _ bacteria," he added. [These are different capsular types of _S. suis._ Type 2 has always represented the most virulent type in both swine and humans. - Mod.LL] _____________________________________________________________ Chen said antibiotics are effective in tackling the organism, but not after it has led to multi-organ failure, which is largely to blame for the high morality rate of the disease. _____________________________________________________________ "The mortality rate was particularly high in the early phase of the outbreak, as many patients took it [to be a] cold or flu," said Chen. _____________________________________________________________ Earlier symptoms of the disease are similar to those of flu, with high fever, fatigue, nausea and vomiting, but many patients became comatose shortly afterwards and had bruises under their skin. _____________________________________________________________ The epidemic broke out in late June 2005, 1st in Ziyang and Neijiang, and later spread to 10 cities, including Jianyang and the provincial capital Chengdu. _____________________________________________________________ The Ministry of Health disclosed that the disease had claimed 38 lives in the province by midday Wed 3 Aug 2005, and the number of confirmed and suspected cases had risen to 165 and 41 respectively. _____________________________________________________________ -- Cat Bachman [ProMED thanks Cat Bachman for this contribution. _____________________________________________________________ This posting speaks to, at least in some cases, a very short period from the apparent swine exposure and onset of infection and a very short fulminating course. 2 bacterial pathogens come immediately to mind that may have a short time, in hours not days, from inoculation and onset of infection. Both Group A streptococcal and _Pasteurella multocida_ (the latter usually associated with feline bites) wound infections can occur within hours of exposure, but the rapidity of onset does not necessarily correlate with severity or fulminating infection. Such rapidly fulminating infections can be seen in pneumococcal (_S. pneumoniae_) postsplenectomy infection and in meningococcemia. - Mod.LL] _____________________________________________________________ ****** [2] Date: Thu 4 Aug 2005 From: ProMED-mail Source: CNN.com [edited] _____________________________________________________________ Mystery pig germ baffles experts ----------------------------------- Experts on a strep. germ that's sickening people and pigs in China are baffled by reports of 37 farmers suddenly falling ill, bleeding under the skin and dying, all previously unheard of with the disease. _____________________________________________________________ While not uncommon in pigs, _Streptococcus suis_ is seldom seen in people and never produces dozens of cases all at once, raising bigger questions about whether the germ has mixed with some other bacterium or virus. _____________________________________________________________ "Something is different," Marcelo Gottschalk, one of the world's leading experts on the disease, told The Associated Press on Wed 3 Aug 2005. "We are worried, and we wonder what's happening. We would like to have the strain to identify." _____________________________________________________________ Gottschalk works in the world's only reference laboratory for _S. suis_ at the University of Montreal in Canada and says no one in China has contacted him for help since the outbreak was reported. So few people have studied this disease, he is unsure how the Chinese have been able to identify it and what type of vaccine they plan to use, since immunizations typically are not effective. _____________________________________________________________ Chinese state media have reported that enough vaccine for 350 000 pigs has already been sent to Sichuan province from a company in southern Guangdong province and that enough doses for 10 million swine will be shipped later. _____________________________________________________________ Gottschalk said _Streptococcus suis_ usually takes a while to develop in people and often causes meningitis followed by partial or permanent hearing loss. Most people also survived after being treated with antibiotics, and cases were typically few and far between; Thailand, for example, usually had less than 20 known cases a year, he said. China has reported more than 200 confirmed or suspected human cases since June 2005. _____________________________________________________________ The WHO and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization have questioned whether _S. suis_ could possibly have combined with some other disease or bacteria in China. _____________________________________________________________ "Why is it behaving differently all of a sudden?" said Juan Lubroth, an animal health official at FAO in Rome. "One explanation is you have additional problems and it's not just _S. suis_ that's causing it." _____________________________________________________________ Thomas Alexander, retired deputy director of the University of Cambridge's School of Veterinary Medicine, was a pioneer in studying this particular strep. germ. He said the bacteria was commonly found in the tonsils of healthy swine in different parts of the world. However, it sometimes becomes pathogenic when too many pigs are crammed together in unsanitary conditions. _____________________________________________________________ "In my experience, it's much more chronic. They're describing death within 24 hours," he said by telephone from England. "What they're describing doesn't fit the picture." _____________________________________________________________ Based on his limited information, Gottschalk said he was not overly concerned about the pig disease spreading across borders, since bacterial diseases tended to change more slowly than viruses like flu. He would, however, like the Chinese to send samples so he could try to identify the strain. _____________________________________________________________ "It's extremely difficult for us get the real information for Chinese agriculture," he said. "I'm not really sure if they have all the background necessary to study this bacteria or infection. Few labs in the world are capable of studying this." _____________________________________________________________ -- ProMED-mail [This last posting summarizes the thoughts of several acclaimed experts on _S. suis_. Their collective thoughts continue to reflect the differences seen in this cluster attributed to _S. suis_ and what has been described with human _S. suis_ infection previously. - Mod.LL]

Date: Thu 4 Aug 2005 From: ProMED-mail Source: International Herald Tribune [edited] _____________________________________________________________ Salmonella cases climb to over 1000 as 1st death in outbreak is confirmed ----------------------------------------------- Over 1000 people have been affected by the largest Salmonella outbreak in Spanish history, after consuming contaminated precooked chickens sold last week under the SADA and Pimpollo brand names, according to figures released yesterday, 3 Aug 2005, by the consumers association FACUA. A 90-year-old man died in Valencia on Tue 2 Aug 2005 as a result of the salmonella infection, and a further 141 people were still being treated on Wed 3 Aug 2005 evening in several hospitals across the 13 regions affected by the outbreak. _____________________________________________________________ "For the time being, most patients show only slight symptoms of dehydration common to most diarrhea-related disorders," Health Ministry sources said yesterday [3 Aug 2005]. "As usual with salmonella cases, complications only arise in children, the elderly and people suffering from other pathologies that are aggravated by food poisoning. Fortunately, we have barely seen any such complications," read a ministry statement. _____________________________________________________________ SADA sources, meanwhile, confirmed that the firm has withdrawn from the market 150 000 units of its precooked SADA and Pimpollo chicken, and that it will destroy them in collaboration with health authorities. No contaminated products remain in the market, said SADA Director General Javier Rodriguez. The company found there were problems with some of its products on Wed 28 Jul 2005 and proceeded immediately to halt distribution. 2 days before that, however, regional health authorities in Castilla-La Mancha had conducted a health inspection of SADA's affected plant and found no breaches of health safety. _____________________________________________________________ The source of the problem was in a slightly bent gravy distributing tube in the company's Toledo plant, which caused remains of old gravy to accumulate over time. _____________________________________________________________ -- ProMED-mail [The accumulation of gravy in a distributing tube is being pointed to as the cause of the contamination. No details of the ingredients in or the processing of the gravy are given. The serotype of the organism involved is still not provided. - Mod.LL]
