The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

When will it end? Where will it all lead?

Today is one (lunar) month since 7/7.
They have lately been using one month deadlines.

London could be viewed by them as a type of "last warning" (shot across the bow).
Saturday (Friday pm here) is Day 30.

A police precinct in Atlanta has been evacuated due to a suspicious package. I do not have any other information...it was a quick break-in on CBS TV in Atlanta.

10 tapes, 2 attacks within days, 3 attacks within weeks

I've been sure that the next attacks would happen during working hours, but now I'm rethinking that.

9/11/01, 7/7/05, and 7/21/05 all happened during business hours.

Anyone think the next attacks may happen during a weekend? Series of shopping mall attacks?

I'm still inclined to think they prefer to hit the big cities during work day commute time for maximum chaos.

It was determined last summer after the NBC report that all Zawahiri tapes since 1998 have been followed by attacks within 90 days (with the possible exception of one or two).

The average span between tape and attack is much less than that. It may have been a 30-45 day average, but it was distorted by the 2 attempted assassinations of Musharraf, which took place 3 months or so afterwards. I seem to remember the majority were weeks and sometimes days.

(This is probably why the Israeli security guy on Fox in late June/early July made the 90-day prediction - - last Zawahiri tape was June 17. He didn't pull that number out of the air).

Fox News seriously needs to screen their "experts" better.

Most of them are top-notch, but a sizable minority are not. Fox has more "questionable" guests (to be diplomatic) than all the other networks (cable and broadcast) put together.

Keep in mind that article is almost a yr and a half old, so there are more attacks since. It was worth noting that big attacks tended to follow quicker though, IMO.

Weekend attacks seem to be outside the MO, so far. But, depending on the attack... weekends would likely work just as well.

With the exception of Bali vacation resort area. Americans and Europeans take vacation this time of year - hotels could be a target

Assuming they use these tapes not just for rallying the masses but to send signals (not an unreasonable assumption), it is more likely they will use static visual cues rather than audio cues because they cannot control how al-Jazeera will edit the tape.

As long as a single frame of the video is aired, even if it is a still-shot, the signal is communicated.

The news for CBS-46 Atlanta just said it was the DeKalb County precinct and said there were people in special suits entering the building now to further investigate the package. They said they do not have any more information at this time as what the package is.

Al Qaeda Tapes Prompt FBI Warning

The FBI is warning state and local authorities that recent taped statements by al Qaeda leaders may signal that another attack on the United States has been approved.

CBS News National Security Correspondent David Martin reports al Qaeda has a track record of releasing statements by its leaders just before major attacks like the Africa embassy bombings in 1998.
