"Why would the illegal segment disappear "

If we provided a legal avenue for American employers to get the foreign workers they have to have in order to stay in business, that would reduce the demand for illegal immigrant laborers, and permit us to enforce the sanctions against those which still chose to go the illegal route.

We can't can;t afford to prosecute American businesses today that hire illegals because our economy is dependent upon those businesses. Business are the golden gooses we can't afford to kill.

Remember that when you see a production floor that has employees that look illegal, that on the second floor are bookkeepers, managers, salesmen, engineers, secretaries, etc.. who would be out of jobs if the production line stopped.

You must be out of your mind.

For decades the United States was the pre-eminent economic power in the world...without resorting to outsourcing or illegal immigration to provide labor.

The problem is those few at the top of the corporate food chain who are getting just a little MORE greedy...they remember the days of the robber barons, but are prevented by US laws (and, alas, for awhile, by union thugs) from implementing those policies on US soil, against US citizens.

So they outsource and bring in illegal immigrants.

Presto! No social security tax, medicaid, insurance, benefits, retirement...

and wages 20% less to boot!

Yo Swampy,

You're not answering me. What do you mean by "employees that look illegal"? Their skin color? If not, then what?

>"Business are the golden gooses we can't afford to kill."<

Wrong. The consumer is the Golden Goose that we cannot afford to kill.

There is a circular interdependence between the business supplier/employer, and the consumer.
Businesses need consumers with enough discretionary income to buy their products. Consumers need jobs that pay enough to provide discretionary income to buy those products.

Considering how busy you are today on these immigration threads, you don't seem to find the time to answer my question. What exactly do you mean by "employees that look illegal"? How exactly does a person "look illegal"?

There already is a legal avenue for American employers to get foreign workers and it hasn't reduced the demand for illegal workers. We don't need new laws. We need to enforce the laws already on the books.

There are already laws that permit us to enforce the sanctions against those which still choose to go the illegal route. We don't need new laws. We need to enforce the laws already on the books.

What you're saying, in essence, is that the existing gun laws aren't keeping people from getting killed by gunfire, so we need new gun laws that will prevent murder.

We can't can;t afford to prosecute American businesses today that hire illegals because our economy is dependent upon those businesses. Business are the golden gooses we can't afford to kill.

If we can't afford to prosecute American businesses already breaking the existing laws (which are going unenforced) then how will be prosecute the businesses breaking the new laws you're proposing? If enforcing existing laws will kill the golden goose, then enforcing new laws will result in a goose that's just as dead.

Remember that when you see a production floor that has employees that look illegal, that on the second floor are bookkeepers, managers, salesmen, engineers, secretaries, etc.. who would be out of jobs if the production line stopped.

Balderdash! Show the proof which supports such a statement.
