Iraqi suspects suffocate in police custody

Nine bricklayers detained by security forces on suspicion of involvement with Iraqi insurgents have suffocated to death while held for over 14 hours in a police van.

An Interior Ministry official says three other suspects, who survived being locked up in the van in the sun, have been taken to hospital.

He says they will be interviewed by authorities who are investigating the case.

The incident started on Sunday in the Ameriyah district of western Baghdad when one of 12 bricklayers sustained gunshots during a firefight between insurgents and police.

His colleagues rushed him to a hospital in the Shuala district where he was pronounced dead.

Iraqi police commandos then arrived at the hospital where they arrested the 11, along with one other man who was there accompanying his pregnant wife.

The suspects were taken to the commando headquarters in the Jihad neighbourhood in western Baghdad where they were said to have been beaten and locked in the police van from 11:00am Sunday to 1:00am Monday.

There have been numerous allegations of brutality, particularly by police and special commandos, against detained insurgent suspects.

It worked pretty much the same in Thailand but the NGO's and Muslims get really whiny about it.

Awwwwwwwwwwww!

That's just terrible!
What about their civil rights?

This is the sort of thing that happens to non-combatants in a de facto war. Let's try to avoid it next time, guys.

No great loss, however.

Were these guys actually innocently laying bricks at the time they were captured? It's certainly possible, but something tells me to doubt the AFP report, since there was this firefight going on between police and "insurgents" and the "bricklayers" managed to get caught up in it. Why does the report refer to them as "bricklayers" insead of the more typical and simple term, "civilians?" When did occupation become an issue in a case like this?

Did the police mistake the trowels for guns or were these guys actually in possession of mortar and trowels?

Were the guys slinging bricks at the cops and AFP instantly assumed they must be bricklayers if they had brick? Or did AFP confuse a military issue metal mortar with the more conventional sand and cement kind that comes in a bag? "Oh, they had mortar? They must be bricklayers! That's it!"

If the press were more trustworthy I wouldn't have to doubt them.

It was a preempitve measure...After all, if you listen to what the MSM says, regular working people are taking up arms. So it is not a matter of IF they were terrorists, if they were not, it was only a matter of time before they took up arms anyway. Right? Isn't that what MSM is saying? So where's the harm? Why report it? Just some more dead terrorists.

So which is it MSM? Are they harmless little fuzzball bricklayers who got baked or is the populace taking up arms against occupiers? Difficult to have it both ways.

Based on what I read earlier they were Sunnis and a Sunni Supreme Council (or whatever) representative said they were tortured. Just a little hypocracy here - Sunnis make up the backbone of the insurgency, who massacre innocent civilians in Iraq all the time, mostly Shi'ites. But when one or two of THEM gets whacked, its this "enormous crime." Sounds like the Sunnis would make great Democrats!!

Remember Vietnam.

Any day now, you can expect the left to require that this new government, under brutal terrorist seige that kills civilians daily, will be expected by the MSM to maintain our culture's sensibilities about the rights of terrorists.

When the chips are down, the left will deny the Iraqis the defense of multicultural diversity.
