OCEAN CITY - South-end visitors are defending their amateur fireworks displays after police cracked down on Monday's illegal celebrations.
Police wrote 25 tickets and confiscated enough fireworks to fill six 55-gallon drums.
But police were not prepared for the angry reaction they got from many south-end residents, who hurled eggs and insults. Some people tried to block in police cruisers. Others reportedly spit at police.

Tea, anyone?

That isn't likely to happen here. The people who live next door to our police station light all kinds of fireworks from the parking lot of the police station.....year round.

In an ideal world, we could all set-off our own fireworks whenever and wherever we wanted.
That's because there would be any negligent jacka$$es setting fire to other people's homes and buildings. Sadly, these beligerent morons truely believe they have a right to inflict damage on their neighbors' properties. I say screw 'em. I hope the police throw the book at 'em.

A shared space, like a city, has to have rules governing that shared space. If these people were in the middle of nowhere blowing their fingers off, it wouldn't really matter, but they're not in the middle of nowhere.
If these people have a problem with the rules then they can use the political process or move to a more liberal town. They don't need to assault police.
When we talk about freedom around here I hope we don't mean anarchy.

I agree.
There seems to be a segment of our society that thinks freedom means the freedom to be a jerk.

Damn. I didn't know
OC stood for anything
but Orange County.

"Riggs said that when police swept the beach looking for fireworks scofflaws, many parties moved inland, where the projectiles presented a genuine danger to people and property."
***
"But Riggs said the city's crackdown was ill-conceived. She said the people behind the amateur displays are responsible and safety-minded. In past years, they would keep everyone a safe distance away and shoot fireworks over the ocean."
***
"A lot of people thought the illegal fireworks were better than the city's because of the fog," the mayor said.

Who's the bone head w/ that PD that decided to go after fireworks?Wouldn't their resources have been better utilized going after drug dealers,muggers,etc..?What's the problem w/ people shooting off fireworks a couple times a year?Tampa PD doesn't make a big deal over it unless neighbors complain.I live 2 blks from the local Galaxy Fireworks(aka ground zero). They must pay their workers w/leftover pyrotechnics.Great show.

Since they can't buy a drink in Ocean City, I guess they need some way to have fun.

Anarchy, IMHO, is preferable to a police state.
On the 3rd of July I was in Wichita for a funeral. When the tornado sirens went off at about 8:00 PM, We were all told by the police we had to crowed into the "safest" hallway in the motel, and wait until all was clear.
Well kiss my grits... I'm not going to be in Kansas during a tornado and cower in some dark hallway with 200 other people and miss the whole thing. I will decide what risks I want to take, thank you.
All the adult men in our family chose to stand outside and enjoy it. It was the best fireworks display I have ever seen (though a day early).

NJ is a police state, they even ticket you for flicking a cigarette ash out the window on I-80 while the drug and gun runners are passing by. Crime is high and one can't easily purchase a gun. fireworks should be legal in NJ.
