Tony Blair Says Leaders Must Faces Terrorism's Root Causes

Published: Jul 9, 2005 LONDON (AP) - British Prime Minister Tony Blair said Saturday it is crucial to address terrorism's underlying causes, which he identified as deprivation, lack of democracy and ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

Thursday's bomb attacks on London demonstrate the pressing need for world leaders to tackle problems like poverty, he told British Broadcasting Corp. radio. He said leaders had taken on some of those issues at the G-8 summit of the world's wealthy nations in Scotland this week.

"I think this type of terrorism has very deep roots," Blair said. "As well as dealing with the consequences of this - trying to protect ourselves as much as any civil society can - you have to try to pull it up by its roots," he said.

That meant boosting understanding between people of difference religions, helping people in the Middle East see a path to democracy and easing the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians, he said.

"Ultimately what we now know, if we didn't before, is that where there is extremism, fanaticism or acute and appalling forms of poverty in one continent, the conseqences no longer stay fixed in that continent," Blair said.

LONDON - In a July 9 story about Prime Minister Tony Blair's comments on overcoming global terrorism, The Associated Press erroneously reported that he spoke of easing the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians. Blair did not specifically mention the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in his interview with the British Broadcasting Corp.

As for the poverty thing, Blair has an obsession about poverty... perhaps it's his liberal side. The 9/11 hijackers were not poor and the millions in Africa, China etc that live on a buck or so a day seem to get thru the week without blowing up pizza parlors...

We don’t yet know if our Muslim brothers are behind the attack on the London subway system, but it appears that the six bombs were placed in tight public areas to maximize killing, maiming, suffering and horror, which has all the hallmarks of the Religion of Peace...

Rarely is a man made a public fool of in such monumental fashion as the mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, who recently called George Bush the “greatest threat to life on the planet,” while at the same time embracing radical Islamists, such as Al-Muhajiroun, a cleric that publicly supports Osama Bin Laden. While Livingstone recently referred to Jews as “War Criminals” and “Nazis,” he lauded as “honorable” the same radical who publicly praises Islamic bombers.

Although the “greatest threat to life” was in his country at the time of the attack, the good mayor seemed never to consider President Bush a suspect, and instead spent much of his first news conference insisting that religion was not a part of the terrorists’ agenda, which means… well, let’s just say he’s not worried about the Jews right now, either.

The disconnect between theory and practice on the part of the intelligentsia could hardly be clearer. It’s simply too bad that ordinary British commuters weren’t swilling champagne with Mayor Livingstone in Singapore, the day that his smug little world collapsed under the reality of Islamic Jihad.
