Milwaukee's black leaders say the enemy is within

MILWAUKEE (Reuters) - Two days before the oldest and best-known U.S. civil rights group holds its yearly convention in Milwaukee, black leaders in the city say their community is being torn apart from the inside.

Civil rights leaders like 57-year-old Prentice McKinney, who fought to free Milwaukee's blacks from the ghetto, say gangs, drugs and violence have left those who still live in the nation's urban cores in fear of the next generation.

"Back then, the enemy was clear, it was white racists, and racist police officers," said McKinney, who was a black teen-age "commando" in the 1960s and now runs a tavern once frequented by fellow activists.

"It was a legalized system of segregation. And so, the challenge was between the white establishment and the African-American population. Today, the African-American population is being destroyed by its own youth ... an enemy from within."

How you do "win economic equality for blacks?"

It will never be won by some court-ordered payout, or government-mandated social engineering programs. It will only come bout by these folks realizing that if they don't change their culture, they are doomed to failure and discrimination.

A good change to their culture in Milwaukee would be realizing how badly liberals are screwing them over on a range of issue: the teachers unions balk at any changes and are whole heartedly against vouchers, they are all for welfare and many in the inner city have accepted this as a fact of lie, and a range of many other issues (abortion, crime, etc.)

Its really a damn shame what has happened there and the voices for change in thinking in Milwaukee have always been drowned out by those of the "victims."

I just hope this is a start and not a quickly burning out flame.

Every individual has to learn on his own that "equal opportunity" does not mean "equal results." Some folks just never do get it.

Yup.

The primary problem in the inner city is attitude. You change that, you have the world on your platter. Larger companies go out of their way to hire minorities.

The answer is simple. Go to school, do your homework, turn off the TV. I know, I grew up there.

I thought it was disturbing that Mr. Gordon would use such a phrase when quoted in the posted piece above. These folks are really and truly brainwashed about achieving success in America by leaning and depending on the government. When you think the government is going to "save your bacon," you are about to be severely disappointed...and then you'll blame your failure on someone else. How tidy.

lot of Black people dont want to be talked down to with someone with a wad cash, who has had a child out of wedlock and may or may not have sexually assaulted a bunch of women.

I guess that's why it's okay for them to have Jesse Jackson as their leader , huh?

There have been positive steps in restoration developments and in upgrading public housing in Milwaukee. There also are good people of all races coming together to make neighborhoods better.

The area around Washington Park has had a good neighborhood association for years to try to keep the peace. The Riverwest area is undergoing some gentrification and it is not pushing out the poor, but making the whole area better.

Despite this, the violent young blacks are still messing up and inflicting violence on others, including other blacks. In Riverwest, a tavern/restaurant owner was recently shot by a 14 year old who was trying to rob customers sitting at sidewalk tables. He lived, but is hurt bad. This is what tears apart neighborhoods.

A lady of dim circumstances and dimmer prospects used to occasionally show up on the front porch of a friend of mine and ask for rides to places, usually the local unemployment office.

Said lady once remarked to my friend "You know...I think they really do want me to get a job." Like it was a new concept for her, and the light had finally dawned.

"You have a population of older African-Americans ... who are now afraid of the children in their neighborhoods," McKinney said.

But look at the bright side Mr. McKinney -- you ran out all those racists cops!

"We marched for fair housing, and now we have homelessness," Martin said. "I remember when there was good housing stock and families thrived. Now there is empty lots. I remember business districts that were as busy as any shopping mall and now they are vacant stores."

They can thank LBJ for these developments, together with the so-called "Great Society" and the rest of bog government excesses over the last forty years.

I fully agree. I drove through Wash Park on the way to Miller Park and that was one of the areas that really stood out tome.

The young kids are the main problem. Its no secret as to why Summerfest has very few black acts this year. The security issues were too much to handle and the groups of black kids knocking around white kids down there was even too much for Eugene Kane. My cousin also acidentally bumped into a black kid at Miller Oasis last week and before he could apologize, got a cigarette put out on his neck.

Its this problem that I don't know if they'll ever solve.

I agree. Reading your post again, lot of Black people dont want to be talked down to with someone with a wad cash, who has had a child out of wedlock and may or may not have sexually assaulted a bunch of women , I would say those people who wouldnt listen to Bill for those reasons wouldnt listen to Jesse at all anyway.

I still have the #3 iron I used to sleep with while living off campus and attending Marquette University.

Like all northern industrial cities, Milwaukee has fallen far and fast in the past 30 years.

Accountability in the Black community is a must.

Agreed.

...after years of racist conditioning which has now spawned learned helplessness, lets not forget how it got that way in the first place.

That's exactly the wrong attitude. The permanent "victims" in the Black community need to quit dwelling on the past and get rid of the "victim" mindset. It's time to move forward and quit making excuses.
