this would be outstanding news. If the resignations were to happen at once and soon, then the SC would be virtually shut down until the vacancies were filled, right? The dems could be more successful in stalling the filling of a single vacancy than 3 of them.

First off they would probably send a letter like O'Conner saying that they will step down when a successor is named. Secondly I don't think you have to have all the judges positions filled. Haven't supreme court judges recused themselves from cases before?

He understands the border. But he also understands there is nothing that can be done outside of Mexico becoming a modern nation with a strong economy. This is something that even many freepers can't grasp unfortunately.

let's see if stevens goes, o'connor goes...and then GWB tells Rehnquist that he doesn't accept his resignation...then...the math could start to get interesting....

Ah, my fellow VRC members, I see our plan is proceeding as scheduled. The building blocks are being laid for the SCOTUS to appoint Rush Limbaugh as President for life. He, of course, will conquer the world and convert everybody to Christianity. I thought our plan had been thrown off track for awhile, but we are back on schedule!

I mentioned recess appointments on another thread.

It would be perfectly legal, the senators would be forced to understand why he was doing it, and it would thwart the filibuster.

I'm all for it. Totally.

The only reason the dems have been using the filibuster is to prevent a vote - a vote they KNOW they would lose, and the confirmations would proceed.

LOL, I can just picture it.

Remember a near decade ago when we were treated to Ken Starr's leaving the house every morning? Those were the days. < /rolling eyes >

Apparently you are unaware that Bush has done a fantastic job as president even with the hyterical opposition of the RATs and RATmedia. Opposition at the level of that against Lincoln.

Few things are more sickening than these constant threats "never to vote again", "never to vote GOP again if blah, blah, blah." People need to GROW UP and accept the fact that WE (the far right and we are that) will not get everything we want since we DO have a democracy and not a dictatorship.

It is particularly sickening to hear the so-called conservatives express this nonsense and show so little faith in a great leader.

That is incorrect thinking. Gonzales must be first or not at all. The longer he is AG, the more cases he would need to recuse himself from as an associate on SCOTUS.

You assume that many cases will be heard to which he would recuse himself..... Recusal isn't that prevelant among the justices..... Secondly they don't hear a large number of cases each year thus ones any AG has been involved in will be limited.... But yes there is a recusal law, if they honor it. jmo, obviously yours differs....

I think if Bush goes the recess appointment route, it's only playing into the dems' hands. They won't be "forced" to vote, they'll just vamp for time, waiting for a dem president to appoint the people they want.

Such a recess appointment might force constitutional issues that would end up before...the Supreme Court!

The NYT, PBS, and the rats will propose George Mitchell, Sen Biden, and Lani Davis as "thoughtful, deliberative, alternatives to W's right-wing extremists (like Gonzales) and suggest that it be put to a national vote instead of giving so much power to one party and one man. Oh yeah, no electoral college, either.

This conservative will continue to criticize President Bush. He is no conservative and has not advanced the conservative agenda one bit.

Not holding my breath though as I think the libs on the SCOTUS will hang on, like pit bulls, till the bitter end and will only leave the court feet first.

Oh God please bring that to pass quickly. Better that they should die and be removed than that they should continue leading others into hell

Quit beating on red irish. I was taken to task last week for saying I would leave the Republican Party if Bush failed to nominate the type of jurists he PLEDGED to nominate when he ran first time around. His famous quote: he prefers judges "in the Thomas and Scalia mode."

Well, I do, too. And if he's going to fall back to a "consensus" candidate, he risks losing a lot of dedicated people for his party, people who have been waiting a generation or two for this opportunity.

If he doesn't put the right judges on the bench, and a dem gets elected in '08, forget about a good Supreme Court in your lifetime. Look at the ages of the judges! Put on one or two "moderates" now, then, after 08, three to four libs, and the country is done.

And if that's the scenario, there's not much point in voting anyway. People like you seem to relish the opportunity to lecture us on being "selfish," or "childish," but maybe you should consider it a mark of high character. We will compromise on most issues, but on some, there can be no compromise. It's a line in the sand. And NOT voting under circumstances such as these is a political act.

Yes, they have. But I would think 3 vacancies would in effect shut the SC down. I agree with your first point and was already aware that that was how these things normally work. Wishful thinking on my part.

I quite agree. Unlike any other issue, this one is for all the marbles.

Bears repeating:
This conservative will continue to criticize President Bush. He is no conservative and has not advanced the conservative agenda one bit.
I am not a compassionate conservative and I will not pretend to be one for "the sake of majority". I vote issues, not party lines.
If the Republicans continue to ignore conservative issues, then who cares if it's a Democrat in the office? Perhaps then at least we'd have MORE stale-mates than a 400 billion+ highway bill with no veto pen used in 4+ years.
