Bush warns to let review of Chinese UNOCAL bid run

President Bush said on Thursday it was best to let an official U.S. review of the Chinese bid for U.S. oil company Unocal run its course without him getting involved.

"There is a process that our government uses to analyze such purchases. It's best I allow this process to move forward without comment," he said when questioned on the sidelines of a Group of Eight summit at Gleneagles, Scotland.

The Chinese state-controlled energy firm CNOOC Ltd has offered $18.5 billion bid for Unocal Corp., higher than a rival offer from U.S. firm Chevron Corp .

Despite the higher price of CNOOC's bid, it has encountered significant opposition from some U.S. lawmakers who want the Bush administration to review the bid to determine whether the Chinese government-backed offer poses any threat to U.S. national security.

Translation:

Unless there is any public pressure not to, Bush will roll over to the Chicoms.

Who doesn't think the Chinese government is a security threat to the USA?

Maybe it's not as good a deal as it seems.

" Unless there is any public pressure not to, Bush will roll over to the Chicoms."

...or that he will not intercede on their behalf.

..."There is a process that our government uses to analyze such purchases. It's best I allow this process to move forward without comment,"...

Unless it changed, that process usually involves someone's pockets being filled with Chinese cash and the product or service going to the Chinese.

GW rarely takes a stand on anything...let alone fights for the conservative cause in any rip-roaring way. I am still waiting to hear that he has criticized the eminant domain decision and what he intends to do about it.

There's no time for conservative issues. Don't you know there is a war on terror going on?

According to Bush, that's only thing that makes you a conservative these days.

This whole summit is absolutely meaningless after the terrorists attacks that occurred today in London. Very few things that will come out from this summit will be implelmented and in a very large degree, that is excellent.

"GW rarely takes a stand on anything"

Untrue. He took a stand for increasing federal pending on education, expanding LBJ's Medicare program and defending Gonzales from those nasty conservatives.

Another fine example of the leadership we were sold as a bill of goods that doesn't exist.

Now compare this to what the President said that he does not want to comment until it has been reviewed. That is exactly what Congress is asking -- for it to be reviewed, but some folks on this thread immediately attack the President for not stepping in before he has the facts. Have a hunch if he stepped in, the same folks would attack for making a hasty decision.

Some of the anti-Bush rhetoric is getting more predictable by the day! The problem is that it is rhetoric and many times spin without any factual basis. Some Freepers lately have taken to spinning and lying like the RATs! I have stayed pretty quiet for months and read not posted and saw a pattern developing from the anti-Bush brigade. Looks like Anti-Bush brigade from 1999/2000 are alive and well on here no matter the subject in order to stir the pot against the President.

All of you anti-Bush folks better be digging deep in your pockets to replace a lot of Bush people who have left as they decided it was not worth the aggravation to deal with the anti-Bush brigade that has taken over FR.

Clinton openly meddled with the processes of government whenever he felt like it. It was highly unprofessional and beneath the dignity of a President. But lets the process work.

This is not to say that he has not expressed his opinion behind the scenes. But it's not his job to do so in public.

Mum.

What your brain is really trying to do is differentiate between a conservative and a republican. You never have much luck.

Yeah, the anti-Bush people are getting really out of hand. It is becoming hard to tell Free Republic and DemocraticUnderground apart.

I will lose all faith in GW if he lets the ChiComs buy Unocal. Especially after these Middle Kingdom bastards captured our so called spy plane at the beginning of his presidency. I await to see how far down the multinational new world order rat hole GBush will dare plunge.

My bet is Unocal will not be allowed into the ChiComs clutches.
