Pope Deplores 'Barbaric Acts' In London

VATICAN CITY (AP) Pope Benedict XVI said Thursday he deplored the “terrorist attacks” in London, calling them “barbaric acts against humanity,” and said he was praying for the families of the victims.

In a telegram sent to Cardinal Cormac Murphy O’Connor, archbishop of Westminster, Benedict said he was deeply saddened to learn of the news and was spiritually close to all those who were grieving.

“Deeply saddened by the news of the terrorist attacks in central London, the Holy Father offers his fervent prayers for the victims and for all those who mourn,” the telegram said. “While he deplores these barbaric acts against humanity, he asks you to convey to the families of the injured his spiritual closeness at this time of grief.”

“Upon the people of Great Britain, he invokes the consolation that only God can give in such circumstances,” said the telegram, signed by the Vatican secretary of state, Cardinal Angelo Sodano.

“barbaric acts against humanity,”

I loved John Paul 2, but this type of comment is nice to see.

I love the new Pope! I am hoping he comes to the U.S. to speak to the people I would love to see him!

I'm not Catholic, heck I'm Agnostic. But if Pope Benedict comes to the US, I'd go.

Contrast the Pope's statement with the one from the Archbishop of Canterbury, which contains the line -- I kid you not -- "I happened to be with Muslims when I heard the news...". As you can guess, the A of C spent more time warning (albeit subtly) people not to blame Muslims than he did decrying the terrorists themselves. Thumbs up for the Pope for issuing a clear condemnation, undiluted by nonsense about peace-loving Muslims.

I've got a feeling this Pope doesn't mess around. Good for him.

Unlike Howard Dean, when the Pope says he is praying for the families I believe him.

Of course not. Pope Benedict XVI has issued a formal statement just like other world leaders have.
