LOS ANGELES - A mistrial in the Notorious B.I.G. wrongful death case means his family won't get any immediate answers about his slaying but can file a new lawsuit seeking to link the unsolved 1997 killing to the Los Angeles Police Department's Rampart corruption scandal.

U.S. District Judge Florence-Marie Cooper declared a mistrial Wednesday after she expressed concern at a hearing Tuesday that the LAPD had deliberately withheld evidence. Her clerk and attorneys on both sides confirmed the ruling, and a written order was to be issued Thursday.

There were only three days of testimony in the trial, which began June 21 but was interrupted when an anonymous tip led to the discovery of large numbers of LAPD documents that hadn't been turned over to family attorneys.

The family is trying to blame his death on the police? I guess there's more money in that than on trying to find the murderer.

This case sucks. Moonlighting cops accused of murder and then the department of a cover up. Either way the citizen is screwed. Dirty cops, cover-ups, oh yea, and a big payoff funding by the citizen.

Well, if they wanted to get a payday on his death, they had a pretty small window as he was one cheeseburger short of a dirt nap.

You have to scoff at the legal system sometimes.

That was my intial thought. It seems police have been moonlighted as criminal thugs. Then, the department covered it up. It is ugly, with nobody to root for.

Interesting. I haven't read past the excerpt because the registration requirement bugged me. I would wonder what possible motive the cops (corrupt or no) would have for killing some gangster rapper. This is all making me wistful for the days when gangster rappers were killing each other off and otherwise keeping it real.

You'll be relieved to know he's getting his props:

I didn't resgister either, but this is from another article. The cops don't sounds like they were working for the right team. I don't have a dog in this fight other than my tax dollars, so I lose no matter what.

On the video made 5 years ago, Kenny B claims convicted cop Rafael Perez admitted he and another cop, David Mack, worked security for Suge Knight's Death Row Records. Perez also allegedly confessed that he and Mack were at the same industry party on March 9, 1997 where Biggie Smalls was murdered. "Perez said he worked security ... he had a cell phone ... he called Mack on his cell phone and told him that Biggie Smalls was in his truck," the informant told cops.

Biggie was murdered on March 9, 1997 after attending a music industry party in Los Angeles. The family's suit against the city alleges that then corrupt cop David A. Mack and Marion "Suge" Knight orchestrated the rapper's murder and that top ranked LAPD officials covered up their actions.

Some police in the Rampart precinct were found to have strong gang ties, maybe be full-lfedged members. This was a big scandla a few years ago.
