Stage 6 - Thursday, July 7: Troyes - Nancy, 199 km
This is a stage perfectly suited to a long breakaway - only problem is, most of the traditional breakaway protagonists are missing, which may land a surprise stage winner ont the podium. The four Cat 4 climbs and three intermediate sprints, stage 6 will have something for most riders, and if a break does get away, it'll have to move quickly as the strength of those sprinters taking part in this year's Tour stands out - Boonen's performance in this year's Classics shows he can motor all day, and get into the right move at the right time. Look out for the big Belgian to use guile and a strong sprint to post another Tour stage victory, but the number climbs may prove difficult for him and allow a surprise packet such as Liberty Seguros' Koldo Gil to win the stage.

13 seconds is no big deal. But if cyclingnews is correct in that the crash was at the 900m to go mark, then they should correct that to give the peloton all the same time as the stage winner.

Was Lance just held back due to the crash or did he go down as well?

Just held back - it seems that just the sprinters at the front went down.
To: green iguana
Thanks!
No big deal then - although Vino could become a real challenger later on.

13 seconds is no big deal. But if cyclingnews is correct in that the crash was at the 900m to go mark, then they should correct that to give the peloton all the same time as the stage winner. Velonews is saying 700m, and the TDF site also says 900. But it's hard to tell whether the crash was prior to that or outside the 1km flag...

Here is what the rules say: "In the event a rider or riders suffer a fall, puncture or mechanical incident after passing the red flame, and such an incident is duly recognised, in the last 3 kilometres, the rider or riders involved are credited with the same finishing time of the rider or riders they were with at the time of the incident. "
Lance didn't go down so he doesn't get the same time as the winner.

Thanks. Why was I thinking it was the final km? I also thought the rule applied to those held up by the crash...

17:02 - Armstrong Safe In 32nd Place Lance Armstrong was held up by the crash but did not come down. He finished in 19th place and will wear the yellow jersey again in stage seven. There has been no significant change to the general classification after stage six.
17:01 - The Top 10 In Stage Six
The crash on the final turn has caused total chaos. All the usual winning candidates were taken out of the picture but nothing can be taken away from Lorenzo Bernucci who was in the right place at the right time.
The top 10 is:
1. Lorenzo Bernucci (FAS)
2. Alexandre Vinokourov (TMO)
3. Robert Forster (GST)
4. Angelo Furlan (DOM)
5. Thor Hushovd (C.A)
6. Kim Kirchen (FAS)
7. Gianluca Bortolami (LAM)
8. Egoi Martinez (EUS)
9. Gerrit Glomser (LAM)
10. Kurt Atle Arvesen (CSC)

But if cyclingnews is correct in that the crash was at the 900m to go mark, then they should correct that to give the peloton all the same time as the stage winner. Bernucci had already broken free before the crash, so the riders involved with the crash wouldn't be credited with his time.

According to the TDF site, a large group of riders (including all the GC contenders) have been credited with a time 7 seconds back. Vino was credited with the winners' time, so he gains 7 seconds on all the other GC contenders.
Vino is now 62" behind Armstrong.
To: NittanyLion
He also gets a time bonus for winning the stage.

Bernucci won the stage. Is there a time bonus for 2nd?

He also gets a time bonus for winning the stage. I think that's factored in. Vinokourov was 1:20-something back, so the 7 seconds plus time bonus should take him down to about a minute back.
